Matchmaking is still giving me terrible mismatches

So when what I’m about to describe happened I’d played 29 games in Proving Grounds, and it was around 10AM on Sat morning, ques were instant, and I don’t think it was due to low population. I’m talking about this game in particular. Where I got matched against 2 Onyx players, one of which had a highest rank of Champ 2 in Doubles. At the time of the game his CSR was 1575 in Proving Grounds.

Before that match, I won a 3-0 Coli CTF in which I capped the flag twice and went 2-7. Nothing spectacular. It was against a diamond and 3 plats, and I had 2 diamonds and another plat on my team.

Before that I had a close Coli Slayer game against 2 plats, a gold, and an unranked; with 3 unranked players on my team. Each team in this game had one player who was on his first placement match, and each of these players went horribly negative. The guy on their team went 0-10 before quitting out of the match, and the guy on our team stayed the whole time and went 1-18.

The matches before that was similar for me, I’d get matched with golds, diamonds, and unranked players. Nothing to indicate that I’d be playing against Onyx players.

I feel like the feedback that ZaedynFel has been discussing just isn’t what’s happening in game. Looking at my game history in nearly every match I’ve played today someone goes horribly negative, and needs to be carried by the team. Does the MM system match people up like this on purpose? With the expectation that someone will be carried? How is a Plat 3 player getting matched with an Onyx 1575 who’s highest rank ever was Champ 2? My highest is Onyx 1750 in Slayer.

You seem to be assuming that whatever rank someone attains in one playlist is factored in to matchmaking in another, and that’s simply not true. You gotta work your way up in every playlist no matter what you’ve achieved in others. You’re a Plat player, so it’s not inconceivable that you’d match an Onyx player or two every now and then. And considering he’s a low Onyx, he was probably a Diamond 6 before he beat your team.

And of course what ZaedynFel has been discussing isn’t happening. Nothing’s been implemented yet on that front.

You don’t see a problem with a Champ 2 in Doubles playing against a plat 2 in Proving Grounds? That’s exactly what I’m posting here for, to give some feedback that maybe other playlist rankings should play a role in matchmaking. He wasn’t Diamond 6 when he played us, they were both Onyx already, and to make matters worse…they were in a fireteam/party together. Not 2 of them, but they had a TO4 against us. Its a severe mismatch that shouldn’t happen.

I thought the changes went live with the refresh.

I think the poor MM design is one of the major factors in Halo 5’s low player pool, and also a major factor in why so many people quit out of games. I’ve never played a game in my life that has as bad a matchmaking experience as Halo 5. Its an exercise in frustration to play ranked in solo que.

The biggest thing to note about proving grounds is that since it’s a totally new playlist, the ranks are all going to be close packed and not yet fully accurate. There is no prior history in previous seasons of the playlist for the system to rank you by (other playlists all take into account your previous season ranks when calculating your initial placement rank).

Give the playlist another few weeks to start to calm down accuracy-wise with the ranks. It’s unavoidable with a new playlist, unless they tried to carry over your ranks from other playlists (that option has problems too).

If you want to play matches where everyone is closer in skill, try using focused search settings, and playing during peak population hours (probably evenings and weekends),

The one major change that DID go live this month is that now it takes less time for your CSR to converge to your MMR, after a new season starts. But in this new proving grounds playlists, the MMR values themselves are still going to be inaccurate since there haven’t yet been enough total matches played in the playlist to get accurate MMR values. Give it time…

Also, it’s quite possible that you had recently won some games against teams with high MMRs, so the system thought maybe your MMR was actually diamond or higher, and it placed you in a match to assess that possibility. But you guys lost, so the system got new information that helped refine its estimate of your MMR, as perhaps not diamond.

Couple points that might help:

  • Searching “Expanded” and to a lesser extent “Balanced” doesn’t guarantee you similarly ranked players. They look for games as quickly as they can so not necessarily based on skill or connection.
  • Rank doesn’t necessarily determine true skill level. Some players got a high rank riding in the bandwagon of goof players, particularly searching in to4’s, and in other cases some players don’t get the rank they deserve due to other issues (Poor teammates, connectivity, solo queueing, etc.).

Some games it’ll just happen and there’s not really much you can do about it.

Same here. Makes no sense.

Dude I understand your pain in more ways than you can imagine. Like if I’m playing MM I should always get match up with players on my skill level and not 4 levels above me. That isn’t fair in the slightest bit. Then it matches me up with players in a squad of 4 which definitely not fair in the slightest bit.
