I’m a (former) nolife Halo player that has played since CE (not pc), and started playing it multiplayer in H3. I was rank 1 in the world in mantis kills in slayer (which is where kills actually count, so) until yesterday (rank 4 now :() because I took a break like a week and a half ago until now. I’m also rank 5 worldwide in all modes for vehicle destroys, and like rank 60 or something for running riots. While this is nothing to brag about, I just wanted to explain how much I’ve been playing this game since launch. But the initial “overjoy” of the game has finally faded for me, and I’m not going to be able to keep playing despite the -Yoink- in the game like I did before. After the 10 day break, I played 4 games today in the infinity “challenge” CTF playlist.
The long story:
Game 1: I joined in progress a game that was down 0 - 2 on Ragnarok. The other team was a party of 5 and my teammates were a party of 4. I made a huge difference, because both teams were pretty bad, but their entire team of 5 were using active camo which made the game really frustrating, like the point where I was solo controlling top mid racking up multikills continually until some guy had snuck across the map with random ordnance incinerator (-Yoinking!- lucky meh) and shot me from behind with the only weapon that can oneshoot the mantis at full shields and high health. I make a huge impact racking up some good streaks and pushes, but we lose the game 2 - 1 with their flag in our base and a few seconds away from the cap. Makes me hyped for the next game despite the frustrating camo noobs and my teammates being useless.
Game 2: This is a fresh game with 4 randoms on my team against a full party of 5. They controlled top mid most of the game, got the initial laser, and of course when we were up 1 - 0 and I was closing in on the running riot in defense (they had the laser on top mid and sniper both only aiming at me) of course my teammates decide I wasn’t doing a good enough job of running out in the open and being lasered so they took the matter in their own hands and betrayed me (3 of my teammates collaborated, as if they were actually a party). I got a bit annoyed and hid in the bottom of our base and afked for a few minutes, only to come back to 1 - 1 and the mantis just spawning into my hands. I assumed they betrayed me because I was defending (which you should be doing when they have a -Yoinking!- laser on top mid and noone is taking him out) but I guess they simply didn’t know a laser spawned there in the beginning and noone knew they had it. The laser guy on top mid was also either out of ammo or dead, so I pushed top mid solo and controlled it for a good 5 minutes, racking up a cap for my team (almost two) and the game ended 2 - 1. Win, but still pissed me off how people can’t just play the game and not be -Yoinks!-.
Game 3: Yet another join in progress with 4 randoms against a full team on Adrift. The game “starts” 0 - 2 in favor of the enemy team, and this is actually a pretty good team who always team shoots, and after a while I just got pissed off at how ridicolously bad my team was and how they were not paying attention, running off for kills and even afking. -Yoink- this, why am I in this game. 0 - 3 to them, and I left (after about 4-5 minutes).
Game 4: Adrift, down 0 - 1, 4 randoms against a team of 5 once again. Just not as skilled as the players in the previous game. Of course, my teammates were -Yoink- as always, except for one single guy who had situational awareness and positioned to team shoot when I was in vincinity. But fighting a premade that communicates with randoms is, as always, hopeless and I left once again close to the end, after doing some really good pushes and pulls but not managing to score as the only guy who ever did anything against the objective was my only good teammate. And two is not enough when there are four in defense (they were 3 def 2 atk with one switching to flag recover when it was away), and the last guy also somehow twice managed to cap our flag, just running straight through the other 3 people on our team (who were always on the opposite mancannon balcony of where we were running the flag). I’ve had it, the matchmaking formula in Halo 4 straight down sucks and I’m just gonna click this green ring and play some other games.
TL;DR of the four games:
- In all four games, I met a party of 5.
- In only one game my team was a party of 4 (which is still not a party of 5). The rest of the games I was with all randoms with no mics
- In three games, their team was vastly superior in skill to my teammates (equal in the last)
- In only one game did the enemy players feel equally skilled to me (only game where I lost duels, but most of them were 1v2 or 1v3)
- The first game was matchmade against a full party of five camo campers holding mid on Ragnarok
- The second game, I was betrayed repeatedly after defending to well and not pushing with the mantis when the enemy team controlled top mid with a laser and a sniper and my team didn’t even try, didn’t even know that they had the laser.
- Three of the four games were joined in progress and all of these were down 0- 2 except for one which was 0 - 1.
I have to say the matchmaking itself is really bad, and it has no capability whatsoever of matching near equally skilled players (compared to Halo 3). Being matched with lower skill players on your team plain sucks, as does being matchmade to an “equally” skilled team who are using good communication and are used to playing with eachother. Communication is an advantage. Why would it not be part of the matchmaking “formula” (if there even is one???).
This is a rant and a vent, but hopefully people can take it more seriously than all the trolls who don’t even play the game and come here to bring down people’s opinions on it. My 900 games played and stats are all legit, I always go for the objective, never camo, camp, stat play, play passively, or afk (today was my 2nd time ever). I always go for the win. But right now, winning isn’t something you go for through playing, but rather trolling forums or just having irl friends that play Halo to team up with.
My 2cents:
[/li]- Matchmake party sizes against equal party sizes.
- Matchmake equally skilled players with and against eachother, rather than “balancing” teams with good and bad players on both sides. This is frustrating.
- The trueskill formula is -Yoink-. I’ll take a guess that it’s similiar to the H3 formula, which was designed around matching equal parties against eachother, and designed to not throw in bad players with good players to even the teams. A player of 2 skill and a player of 10 skill does not matchmake fairly against two players of 6 skill.
