well this won’t be a popular thing to say at all, but here it comes.
throughout the halo 4 campaign john is shown to be emotionaly attached to cortana. cortana is not a person, she is an object. a computer program and by definition artificial particularly through the eyes of scientists and the UNSC in general. hence this sort of relationship would be viewed as odd maybe even not sane.
John is reffered to as an aging spartan not reliable or trustworthy by Cpt Del Rio. He’s shown respect by Palmer when she doesn’t arrest him and Cmmnd Laskey when he doesn’t stop him. Del Rio is removed from duty by “unsc brass” for not helping john, but its still very in your face that he is called unreliable in the first place.
His face is shown and in it we can see his age, his scars and its made clear that he is old even if he is reliable still. I believe this is done so you the player will realize he is an aging spartan.
in the prologue it is implied that john is to be replaced but it isn’t stated how long before the games story the interogation takes place. they want to know what makes john tick.
cortana in a fit of rampancy mentions that “they replaced you!”. It is clear that after 4 years of not having a master chief he must be replaced. that is im sure military rules. you cant not have a master chief even if he is presumed mia not kia.
cortana faces her death. she may stay dead or she may come back somehow and die later and 343 used this as a test to check your reaction to it as fans. wether this is permanent or not the water is being tested towards the end of killing her off.
Cortana mentions john may get another cortana model AI also hinting at her replacement.
My conclusion here isthe only real logical one I think we can reach… John will no longer be the sole hero of halo soon and may not be in future trilogies at all. I know bungie made master chief cool and 343 can make another spartan just as awesome. nearly any member of noble team could have been had they lone wolfed the reach campaign and rescued a few greatful marines who praised them exsesively, maybe had covenant given them a scary nick name like the demon or ghost or something. carter or emile couldve pulled that kind of wieght. point is nostalgia can cripple a franchise and thats what 343 has managed quite well to demonstrate so im not worried. if i’m right, and 343 kills john, i think im prepared for all of that to take place by the end of halo 6. and thats my prediction, john wont survive the reclaimer trilogy. wether after that halo gets a reboot or if he is actually replaced in a 3rd trilogy and isnt present is anybodies guess.

also worth noting here that this could be a clone of john with a different name. its possible he will get a cortana ai and its likely his armor will stay green as they will want him to match the xbox color scheme assuming xbox doesnt go to red or blue in the next gen. although i almost hope its not just another john and another cortana and i think itd even be cool to have him(or her) not be green. likely itll be a whole new character fully fleshed out because 343 seem to have enjoyed fleshing johns character out and i definitely appreciate the creativity they put into him and the whole story and the attention they have paid to detail. no more anonamous heroes like noble 6 or the rookie or (fire suit) the halo 1-3 masterchief is my hope. a month ago i wouldnt have dared to think such a thing.
There wouldn’t be any Halo without John117. Master Chief 117 is not Commander Shepard, who needs to be killed at the end of the trilogy so as to invoke hyperbolic reactions or to just ensure a few brownie points from ultra-new-emo fans (read n00bs)
For all that Chief has been through , he needs to live a life and be a character of his own.

no riots, ppl will buy halo to see if they messed it up or not just like they bought halo 4 n they will find that 343 didnt mess it up n they will stay. and the chiefs death will be epic and the best tear jerk any game has ever pulled off.
halo is a universe, not a character like mario as evidenced by the title of the games, or a genre like call of duty as evidenced by it’s title. it can be a game a movie an fps or 3rdps cover based if it wanted to, it can be a comic or a cartoon or an rts or whatever they see the community wants

Anyway, i don’t care if gets replaced as long as he gets replaced with some one that has some actual character cause 117 IS almost just a robot in the video games. He doesn’t really do that much at all. THE character of the Halo games was Cortana and they already messed that up with this goofy story in Halo 4.

ok i liked halo 4 but i wouldnt be opposed to a female lead although it would feel a bit too samus aaron like, but dr manhattan… thats a bit extreme, im thinkin along the lines of a carter who is heroic and brave and self sacrificing, without the dumb looking armor but blue would be a nice change of pace. he needs another rank besides chief. maybe smiling and confident with a hint of uncertainty in extreme situations, definitely not affraid to take his helmet off and if he has to be scarred on his face it should happen right before our eyes in a cutscene. im good sticking with our nude silhouette ai. maybe cast in a nice white light this time with a name like after a famous woman of history. like helen or elizabeth or gorgo or something. he should also have history as an infiltration unit hence hes a lone wolf, no reach teammates or anything cause it detracts from his heroics wich will make him pale in comparison to 117 n folks wont like that. he also has to live for at least a trilogy maybe 2 cause i dont want a new spartan every game. maybe he has a team mate but he or she dies early on to save his skin. he also need palmer and miller or a pair just like them in his ear piece and a cut scene here and there with them cause it has to have characers damn it. hell yeah thats good enough for me right there

the grunts should get scaredof him and call him the ghost sorta how the maser chief was called demon. maybe by the second game he gets a nickname like that. and plenty of thankful marines to praise him as you save their hides. he needs an equipable combat knife or an auto knife melee or a lil modern hatchet like in the patriot and be fond of sniping and able to go into a prone position too. its dumb spartans cant lay down. anybody else gotta checklist for master chiefs replacement to measure up to?
ahh i gotcha. u was talking about it like it was chemical spill lol. nah i thought ya got autocorrected or something. guess had i known it was slang it wouldnt be too hard to guess what it meant. and yeah i didnt think 117 had no character its just nice 343 filled in the blanks better. johns emotions of course would mirror the players but it was left to be an understood never mentioned rule. no shocks now that we see how he feels its just nice of em to show it. and yeah a female lead may not fill chiefs boots well enough.

And how many Samus Aran-like characters have there been in fps history? Off the top of my head i cant think of any while a third of fps history is made up of big ultra marine dudes.

John is still an enigmatic hero compared to other space marine dudes in all of FPS history, an irreplaceable asset to the developers. Even when I first played Halo CE without knowing anything about Halo at all , I still felt the guy I was playing must’e wrecked some major -Yoink- to get this suit and be looked on in awe by his marines.
We already have a female space marine in the form of Commander Shepard but yeah I know its a 3rd person shooter but there is still Noble Six.
If you really want a female Hero character it should be Palmer itself, because making a female character out of scratch just for the sake of showing GIRL POWER is not a very thoughtful conclusion.
btw why would any male gamer look at another male’s -Yoink!- instead of a naked female character

As for the Chief, I’d prefer him to live, develop and find some form of peace that isn’t by death. But his character is a soldier - and of a human species/galaxy saving level - meaning he will go out with a bang.
Then we´ll see a legendary ending where the camera spans down from the sky, to a rebuilt Corbulo Academy - with a statue of John/the Chief instead of an assault rifle holding roman.
And here I thought this thread was about the comments at the start, and later on by kinda-rampant about cortana about somebody “replacing” john.
Really, halo 4 seems to set up more that they want to bring about a change in John’s character. He had the evolution thing, only amongst which was the composer immunity, and he ends the game dwelling on him being like a machine. Replacing him with someone else as main character would pretty much toss all this away.
John’s more likely going to evolve phsyicially and mentally over next couple of games.

She’s only naked in the same way someone in a bikini is. She isn’t showing actual private parts.
I think we all assume he will die by the end of this trilogy…either that or he won’t be around/will be too old by the time the UNSC would need him again (seriously, would it really be plausible for 3 back to back to back galaxy-threatening enemies to show up within one man’s lifetime?)
So with that said, i think we can also assume there will be more halo titles after halo 6. Halo is xbox and Microsoft’s cash cow of the gaming industry. Based off these two ASSUMPTIONS (yes i know what happens when you assume) we can conclude that we will indeed see a new hero in the future.
Now, the question is what kind of hero do you want to see? Well for me, i would love to play as a young spartan 4 (maybe even start as a marine or ODST just being integrated into the spartan program) and as the games progress you will see this character climb through the ranks to be the next “master chief.”
I feel this will also give 343 a huge wealth of character possibilities seeing as how you should be part of a squad like majestic or crimson. Seeing as how there would be a series of games 343 would have a good bit of time for you to get tied to all these characters rather than relying on cliche personalities for the player to grasp how that person is like in reach and ODST
the possibilities are endless with character/relationship development and the series could last quite a while especially if you start with the beginning of this new character’s spartan career
TL;DR - I see chief dieing after 6, halo must live on, we should play as a spartan 4 and climb up the ranks throughout the games (this series could seriously last 15+ years!)
Well in Glasslands I think it is made pretty obvious that ONI is trying to replace the Chief with SPARTAN-010. I think she will show up in a future Halo game as an anti-hero to the Chief along with Didact.
Did you see Del Rio’s condition when he yelled at the Chief? He was having half a mental breakdown when he said that. The only reason he said “aging” is because John is older than some Spartan-IV’s and hasn’t been very active in the past years. If 343 were to replace John, there would probably be an uproar by the fans.
