Master Chief's new look.

So is the armor we see Master Chief wearing the new artistic vision for the Mark 6? Because we see him wearing the armor before he makes contact with the UNSC, so it couldn’t be the Mark 7… could it?

If it was explained somewhere, can I have a link please.

Thanks!

In Glasslands, Traviss stated that only two or three Spartans had the MK VI MJOLNIR armor, one of them being Naomi. If we come to think about it, she was probably implying the ‘lost and dead spartan’ to be wearing it.

Hinting on the lost and dead spartan part. He’s not confirmed dead, just literally MIA.

343 wanted him to look different. That’s it. It’s a retconned Mk 6. Cortana made the HUD look nice with a firmware update, but that’s as far as the explanation goes.

But I’m mainly curious why they changed the look… Unless, actually. Didn’t someone state that it could rework itself due to nanobots?

Yes, although I’m not sure where… it’s fine if you don’t believe it, because there are no true-blue blue-prints of MK VI, only rumors and sketches.

Yeah its cool and all but he’s been asleep for 4 years did he change while he was asleep?

Something like that is pushing it a bit too far. Although the current answer is that it’s just a retcon, I wouldn’t be surprised if they added in a proper canonical reason for the armor change even if it’s just through a cutscene or something. There’s still like 3 months of development left and I don’t think 343i expected the backlash about the armor like they got. Crazier things have happened.

I’d be completely fine if they were like “hey this happened because of this.” But currently, we see he has this new armor before he even meets a single human being. That’s just odd.

Yes, while he was asleep, Cortana was updating his armor.

I think you’ll find that there is a canonical reason for the armour change. Not only do I remember 343 saying on several occasions early on that we would see reasons for the change, but no-one else seems to be pointing out the fact that the promotional and leaked images for the ‘Forward Unto Dawn’ live action series show a halo 2/halo 3 original Mk VI armour.

Now seeing that FuD is pre-Halo 4, and the current Halo 4 extended commissioning live action commercial shows that they have and do use a Halo 4 Mk ? armour, I assume there will be a reason for the armour change. I assume if they were retconning the Mk VI then they would use the new armour in the FuD miniseries, and not bother creating an original Mk VI. Would be pretty stupid for a company pushing their focus on integrating all media into canon.

It’s artistic license. From a storyline perspective he is still wearing the same armor from Halo 2 and Halo 3, the Mk VI, but it simply has changed appearance. Why did 343i do this? Probably because they felt the Chief needed a reboot and a fresh look and because they wanted to stamp their name on the Halo franchise and claim ownership.

Personally I think he looks great in his new armor, but I can’t help but feel that it hasn’t achieved anything except fragment and dilute the artistic focus of the series by basically saying “Anything can change, nothing is safe”. Wouldn’t be surprised if he changes for Halo 5.

Meh, I don’t care really, I like it.

Cortana was having her way with Chief and while she was in the process she decided to update his Mainframe…then she changed his Armor LMBO! I just made a dirty joke!

Nanobot upgrades while he was asleep… Same armour, just upgraded, heavily modified.

Dont you mean MK VII? the mark 7? because ITS the one with the nanobots. NOT the mark 6.

Frankie said something among the lines of, some of our fans [angry] that the [mark VI] has nanobots. It’s in the technology video of halo 4 game informer.

Also, they say John uses heavily modified mark VI armour, either that or heavily modified gen1 armour. It’s in the halo 4 thingy section, I think in armour abilities.

only firmware can be updated in cryo, actually physically putting new armor on is not what happened…i think

I have… that’s how I know Mark 7 exists… but that doesn’t explain how he would have it prior to the Infinity’s arrival.

Can I have a link, pl0x?

Pretty sucky nanobots if they can change his armor but not patch that gash on his chestplate.
