343 has told everyone that Master Chief’s newer, hipper version of the Mark VI armor is the same suit he wore in Halo 3, and the new look is simply an artistic redesign. That actually makes sense. If you’re gonna take over a game franchise it’s understandable that you’d want to change a few things, but if Chief’s new digs aren’t actually new then why does he have the old armor in all the flashback type dealios we’ve seen?
In the original teaser for the MCC Locke is watching a recording of the classic Halo 2 scene where Chief rides through space on the Covenant bomb, and in that recording Chief is wearing classic MJOLNIR. Any recording of past events in the new Halos should feature 343’s new designs. I understand that the MCC teaser would have been kind of weird if Chief wasn’t wearing the old armor, but they’ve done it in other places where it makes no sense for him to be wearing it.
The new Hunt The Truth update reveals that the original Halo 2 box-art is supposed to be a photo taken by Benjamin Giraud, and Hunt The Truth is an ad campaign for Halo 5, so why is Chief once again sporting classic Mark VI armor? Not only would it have been far cooler if they recreated the Halo 2 box-art using Master Chief’s new look (and far better visuals), it also would have been more believable. When you see inconsistencies like that it just cheapens everything (to a small degree), and it makes no sense. If Chief’s new armor is supposed to be his old armor, then why is he wearing the old stuff in flashbacks? Did he jump to a new dimension, or an alternate reality?
The opening cinematic to Halo 4 is the only instance where we see Chief and other Spartans in the past, but sporting Halo 4’s version of MJOLNIR, and it’s just so much better when they actually pay attention to little details like that.
I know this is kinda nitpicky, but I wish Master Chief would stop jumping between realities.
The canonical explanation for why his armor changed was that Cortana changed it while he was in Cryo sleep. So, while chief was napping for those 4 years Cortana was messing around with his armor.
I like his new look a bit more IMO
I see where you’re getting at, I also thought it was weird that he wore the GEN2 Redesigned “NOT AT ALL” new Mark VI(Which we can’t wear outside of the campaign) in the flashbacks when it was modified in the cryopod aboard Forward Unto Dawn

I’d like to know where Cortana got the tools to give him brand new suit aboard a destroyed frigate, and how the heck she could have modified the suit while he was wearing it. I really hope that’s not their official explanation, 'cuase it’s a really stupid one. It makes much more sense that it was simply an artistic change.
Are they also going to tell us that Cortana modified the Forward Unto Dawn while Chief was sleeping? That thing also had some new digs. Like, the cryo-pods got new casings and everything. I think the whole ship drastically increased in size, too.
I love the redesign, it just makes him look like a hulking tank. I wish they would have better explained his armor change.

Chief is the only Spartan who got a proper new look. Chief’s new armor looks Halo-tastic and epic, the Spartan IVs just look way too wonky and weird. However, all the new armors in Halo 5 look super cool (especially Athlon and Helioskrill). I’m hoping they’ll set a trend for future Spartan armor.

I’m in love with Centurion armor. Like I said before, it’s like marriage between old and new Halo artstyle.
A good explanation would be like this:
2552- Halo 3’s events end, the war is over, the Forward Unto Dawn is drifting in space with Chief and Cortana. Chief enters cryo sleep and tells Cortana to wake him when she needs him
2554- cortana wakes chief up from cryo sleep and tells him that she is lonley, they chat for a bit, cortana says she scanned the Forward Unto Dawn and theres a brand new MJOLNIR Spartan Suit and is a prototype. Master Chief travels through the ship to the armory and finds this state of the art suit, he changes into it. He takes off his current suit, and puts on the brand new suit found in the armory of the broken ship. Chief then returns to Cryo, he tells Cortana goodnight and to wake him up again if anyone finds them.
2557- Cortana wakes chief up a second time, and the events of Halo 4 take place.
I hope 343i makes my explanation canon as it makes the most sense.

I think that would be fine and dandy if the new armor didn’t have all the same damage as the old armor. I think they made it too apparent that it was simply an artistic change for them to make it canon any more.

2554- Chief was walking back to the Cryo bay. He was about to go back to sleep, Cortana asked him to chat a bit longer with her, so he did. They told stories, jokes and laugh. One joke made chief laugh so hard he fell to the ground and caused a huge dent/scratch on the chest piece of his brand new armor. It happened to be in the same place as his old armor, he ignored this, entered the cryo pod and went back to sleep.
I think people would have been really pissed off if they did H2A with the Halo 4 armor.
Btw the Halo 4 prologue actually doesn’t make any sense because those Spartans should have been in Mark IV or Mark V armor. Josh or Frankie has said it wasn’t deliberate; whoever did the cutscenes didn’t have time to make the older model.
It’s just an artistic change and there’s really no satisfactory canon explanation. You just have to accept it and accept there will be some inconsistencies here or there for the sake of aesthetics or time or money or nostalgia or whatever.

Classic! I like this new explanation. Who knew that MJOLNIR armor could be so extensively damaged by space-ship floor boards?

wweird thing is that Forward unto Dawn used post war covenant designs, and post war pelican designs.

I think Chief is wearing the Mark IV in FUD, which make sense. Does FUD show Chief with shielding? I can’t remember. If so that makes no sense.

Go watch Halo Canon’s video explaining this. Nanomachines son.

I’ve watched his video and he does a good job tying together various sources and explaining how it came to be. Just wish 343i would have thought of a concrete canon reason.
Masters Chiefs armour seems less protective than in Halo 4 than in 2-3 yet they are canonically the same. All of the Spartan new armour seems to lack the gel layer or much protection at all now, like female Hero armour, 2% metal very little else. Sparse covering, look at halo wars Spartans vs 343s halo 4 latex rubber suits with a few sparse panels, easy to see in escelation. On another note, Locke’s armour seems to have a flat squared off panel on his helmets forhead like an attachment is supposed to go there…

NOT The most satisfying answer, but it is canonical unfortunately.
