but it obviously blew the helmet up…
and also, a headshot from a sniper immediately kills a spartan.

After that he gets it fixed. as seen in the end of that chapter.

well in multi-player anyway
The DMR fires sniper bullets, which tend to be .303, .338 or 7.62mm NATO (as is with said DMR), with a higher than normal grain count (more bang than "normal.)
The SRS is an anti-material weapon that fires fin stabilised, 14.5mmx114mm, sabot discarding, piercing bolts!!! The SRS is called the “sniper” because anything less won’t fit the role against the Covenant and simplicity of gaming terminology.
The Chief’s helm won’t do much to stop a high powered rifled round at close range, regardless. It won’t crack unless its a “lucky” glancing hit that is on a low angle of deflection because that helm isn’t very thick, or it’s a very far shot.
You shouldn’t really take trailers like this as canon. They are just exaggerated versions of actual events. A prime example of this is watching the Halo 4 E3 trailer, then playing the level Dawn in Halo 4.
I bet they decided to have his armour not as damaged as it is in the teaser, like they did in Halo 3.

at the end of that very issue his helmet and armor was fixed i think this was a red herring.
That and the crack were totally different
