Master Chief's Cloak Has A Double Meaning!!!!

… Just found a hidden foreshadowed message in the Halo Xbox Trailer, and it could possibly be about the Master Chief and Humanity…

Trailer Summary

We all know that in the Halo Xbox One Trailer, shown at E3 2013, Master Chief Petty Officer John-117 is traveling through a mysterious desert, or snow environment. His armour is damaged and he is wearing a cloak, as well as possesses a mysterious chip, assumed to be Cortana’s, but not yet confirmed. Upon his trek, the Master Chief confronts a huge Forerunner Sentinel/War Sphinx/Seeker, which rose from the ground… staring the Chief down, which looks to provoke John.

So here is the collected theories and information, about why the Master Chief is wearing a cloak, and how I came up with another plausible theory:

  1. Frank O’Connor, the Franchise Development Director at 343 Industries; using his Neogaf Forums Account, Stinkles, stated something about the mystery behind the Master Chief’s cloak… .

Orochinagis says: “His armor is damaged, he is not using exoskeleton armor anymore.”
Stinkles replies: “Incorrect. He is deliberately masking his appearance. And that is all your getting.”
This had shown us that their is a purpose for the Master Chief’s cloak, and that we asked ourselves, what is so bad, that even, the Master Chief is hiding from it? But we still do not know if Frank O’Connor was talking about all of Orochinagis post, or just parts of it.

  1. The sand environment, seen in the trailer, could drastically corrode the Master Chief’s armour, and cause armour malfunctions, within systems like his shielding; especially in the sand storms. So this may explain a more practical sense as well…

  2. We discover in Halo 4, from the Librarian Imprint, a much deeper reason for why the Master Chief is so lucky.

A quote from Halo 4, Reclaimer:
Librarian Imprint: “Reclaimer, when I indexed mankind for repopulation, I hid seeds from the Didact. Seeds which would lead to an eventuality. Your physical evolution. Your combat skin. Even your ancilla, Cortana. You are the culmination of a thousand lifetimes of planning.”

This shows us that, John, is starting to reclaim, the Mantle of Responsibility, for mankind; and will actually for-fill his role as the Reclaimer.

  1. (My Findings) Upon reading the Mantle of Responsibility, on Halopedia, I typed in Google what does Mantle mean, just to see what came up… Which upon discovering there are a few descriptions, of a “Mantle”.

1. A loose sleeveless cloak or shawl.
“The Arbiter and Master Chief both possess mantles.”
Synonyms: cloak, cape, shawl…
2. An important role or responsibility that passes from one person to another.
“The Mantle of Responsibilty; The Forerunners had usurped the Precursors mantle, which ironically passed onto Humanity, the Reclaimers, which was the ultimate goal.”
Synonyms: role, burden, onus, duty, responsibility…

Thus 343 Industries could have been foreshadowing John, finally becoming the Reclaimer, and reclaiming the Mantle of Responsibility for Humanity… this could also be the case with Thel reclaiming his species’ independence, and having a part to play in the Mantle of Responsibilities teachings.

It would explain the Xbox One Trailer through foreshadowing… John, the Reclaimer, (Master Chief’s Cloak) having now accepted his role and humanities, let goes of his past, (Cortana Chip) wonders the deserted Forerunner worlds looking for teachings of the Mantle (Desert), and trying to find answers to the future (War Spinx)? Maybe I’m reading into things way to much but… its all fun. This part is speculation as to what maybe foreshadowed?

Symbolism can be a hard thing to tack down, but you may be right. After all, the teaser itself is symbolic of next-gen Halo, is it not?

All this is great!
However, he gripped the chip, so IMO he is still affected, also I’m not too sure on the actual logical reason, but prepare to bombarded with reasons why it isn’t the suit malfunctioning! Also, Frankie saying incorrect was probably referencing the statement" He is no longer using an exoskeleton" which probably means that we will still have a full set of Mjilnor(however you spell it!).
Other than those, good job! I have to say this once again but I believe that the trailer was nearly purely symbolic.

I have to agree the E3 2013 Trailer had a lot of symbolic heaviness… but what do Halo Trailers have in common, that is a legitimate source… the location of the game and the threat involved… take the past trailers for example:

Hmmmmm, good speculation here, I suppose your ideas are as good as anyone’s

Very good and well thought out OP. But this could also be one of those moments where they thought it would be cool to give him a cloak and then developed a meaning after the fact. Or Master-chief could be a Jedi and with episode VII on the way we could have a tie in. (Kidding)

Thought I just necro this post due to Halo 5: Guardians be released this year…

Very interesting indeed, I believe that John 117 will die either at the end of Halo 5 or During Halo 6, I believe that Spartan Locke will take over as the master chief. Seeing as the Chief is now in his late forties early fifties his combat effectiveness is limited. By replacing John 117 the series can continue with an athletic young protagonists and the Master Chief will continue, all be it with a new guy in the suit. The human race is destined to take up the mantle, they were always supposed to take the mantle, before the forerunners rose up against the precursors and forcefully took the mantle.

So you’re saying that the Mantle of Responsibility is just an old tattered Jedi CLOAK? That could mean that the Precursors were actually Jedi, before the Forerunners killed them off. Only one of their cloaks were left behind, and the later Forerunners classified it as the Mantle of Responsibility. Anyone who wears it owns the universe… It all makes sense.

Very interesting post, OP. You may be on to something here. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think it’d be bad if Locke replace Chief, but maybe that will happen anyway.

Frankie confirmed that he will not. In all caps, to boot.

Good.

I definitely like the idea of the cloak (or, “mantle” if you want to use the older definition) symbolizing the Mantle.

So, let’s say that Halo 5 and Halo 6 are all about Master Chief reclaiming the Mantle of Responsibility. Do you suppose that a third trilogy will focus solely on the presumed battle with a returning Flood (perhaps a Flood more like what we saw in Bear’s novels)?

Or would Halo 5 be about reclaiming, and then Halo 6 focus on the Flood?

I realize this is old but…please go to school and take a single english class…that’s not how you use commas, and those are incorrect “their, there, and they’re”…i hope you see this and realize how tilting it is to read such a horribly made sentence…it’s not that hard.
