Master Chief's armor color has to change

If they legitimately want feedback on the art direction, then here’s some.

That eye-gougingly vibrant light green color is absolutely single-handedly killing this game for me. No matter what they do to fix the style, this will always be the remaining elephant in the room.

He looks incredibly out of place next to any other UNSC piece of equipment using an actual regulation olive drab scheme. The whole point of being green is for camouflage, not “ARMY MAN GREEN MAKE VERY BIG GREEN”. He has to look like a soldier, not the jarringly uncanny action figure standing next to actual soldiers. I can understand wanting to stay away from gritty, but there’s nothing gritty about proper olive drab. It’s just a weird line to draw. If olive drab is too gritty, then guns and violence in general are too gritty. Why make a shooter with realistic worldly firearms but your player character is a cartoon superhero for lighthearted childlike appeal? This ain’t Fortnite. We can step away from the hyper-serious delves into grit and realism that happened in the late-2000s – mid 2010s gaming industry without getting cartoony. The era prior wasn’t cartoony, it just wasn’t taking a dive into the seriousness trend as a novelty.

With the whole retro Mark VI design and engraved “117” along with the color, he looks like an exaggerated parody of himself. No subtlety, all marketing. It’s like they got all self conscious about the criticisms of 4/5 and went “Master Chief needs to REALLY look like Master Chief. Master Chief is green, so let’s make him REALLY, REALLY green”. He can be a subdued green while still fully maintaining image. Remember Halo 3?

I may just get a gaming PC so I can mod the color into something that looks correct. Hopefully they pull a Fallout 4 and allow curated mods on console.

1.Spartans are supposed to look out of place.

  1. Don’t need camouflage in a world where invisibility exists.

  2. Reach’s spartans were every color under the sun

glances at my bright pink SIII on the reach campaign
“Yaaaaaaa, I think chief is ok”

Honestly, Chief has always looked liked an uncanny action figure next to actual soldiers. Standing 7’ tall in a suit of half-ton armor is going to make anyone look out of place regardless of what color the armor is.

Carter and Kat are bright blue and George is orange, as such your camouflage point is irrelevant when it comes to the current chief color. Spartans in Halo have always looked like action figures, even h4 and h5.

I think MC looks fine in Infinite, and in every game prior.

That being said, I really assume you’re going to be able to customize MC armor with a million changes/upgrades under the sun. Look and color.

And I really hope those changes are just for multiplayer. I want my custom Master Chief in cutscenes!

Sorry OP but Master Chief has never looked so good and I think the majority of the Halo community agree on this one.

I mean, Cheif was pretty bright green in Halo: CE, and Halo 2 and 3 he was greener then he was in Halo 4 and 5. Plus as others have pointed out, there were some bright Spartans in the past, the only one I can think of who put camouflage in mind was Jun, as he was the sniper/scout for Noble Team and thus had to stay hidden so his cover wouldn’t be blown.

and besides, I don’t think Cheif should worry about camouflage when the Covenant and Banished wear bright colours, with their vehicles being the same. Unless you can tell me an environment where purple and red are dominant.

I almost read this wrong lol

Personally though, seeing the green armour in action in the trailer made me think it looks alright. I can dig it.

Chiefs Armor always stood out in comparison to other Characters. Also i think they already fixed the color slightly compared to the “Deliver Hope” appearance because people complained Chief was to bright green. I like how the color is now, especially under certain lighting, like when he looks at the Status of the UNSC Troops or the Halo Ring.
(I also like the addition of the 117)

Also…if you complain about the Chief standing out, why don’t you complain about the Grunts, Elites and Brutes wearing Orange, Blue and Red?

Fred-104 is blue, Kelly-087 is blue, Linda-058 is silver/white/beige (every time I see her it changes), Chief is only green because it is standard army green and he prefers not to stick out. I’ve seen Spartan-II’s in red and brown armor, black too.

Chief was just basic and didn’t like to stick out in more than one way, that is kind of the only reason I can see why he is green.

Personally? I really don’t care. My Spartan is a white with red trim in matchmaking and lore Spartans have been different colors (talking about 2’s, 3’s, and 4’s).

Now the thing about him being blindingly bright green? I’m honestly certain that may just be a template color, might be just the color itself without any tone change.

Loving his look. The slightly brighter green is spot on. I agree it’s not necessarily a good combat choice (at least outside of a jungle on a sunny day) .

But it’s iconic.

I swear they already made the armor a little bit darker than it was in the E3 2019 trailer. Maybe some of you have your displays set to overly vibrant settings? It’s a common issue, and some might come that way out of the box.

I’m just thankful his armour is green and not some illogical colour that makes you a big target for enemy snipers…

I swear these games always end up going for the Avengers type colours such as the other Spartans in Halo 5. Catering to children.

You people do realize that Spartans also fight in other environments than just woods and jungle, right?
In an urban city landscape, green would be a huge “Shoot Me” sign, as it would be in a desert, snow, etc.
Unless they wear SPI armor, any color will be advantageous in certain locations and stick out like a sore thumb in others.

Hell, the “woodland camo” argument doesn’t even make any sense in the context of a space shooter; Plants on earth have developed a green color because that is where our sun has its emission maximum, so that the chlorophyll is most efficient in absorbing sunlight. Other stars have other spectra, so plantlife on other planes will be colored differently. In addition to that, stars even change their spectrum over time, so the color of the plants will as well if they want to stay perfectly adapted to their environment.

I know everyone has already pretty much given you what for on this one, but Chief in Infinite may be the best looking Chief so far. His armor might even be my new favorite (even topping the Mark V). He’s one -Yoink!- thicc boi.

It’s good but it’s no MK IV <3.

It It certainly defines His muscles very Well compared to early Versions, almost looks like a Seconds “Skin”

Humanity’s symbol for hope should probably stand out, especially on the battlefield. Allies should easily identify him as a one-man army, and enemies should recognize the demon.

Regarding all posts pertaining to color visa vi Camouflage, posts pertaining to different combat arenas on different planets Urban, non urban, all make good points. Everyone leaves out the most obvious. Camouflage (not counting any technological types of cloaking) looses any and all effectiveness against an enemy as advanced technologically as the Covenant. One huge factor that is also missing is that we have no idea what the visual wave lengths are for the various Covenant races making any discussion about camouflage or its veracity ultimately a waste of time and effort as we do not have any let alone half of the relevant facts.
But then again what would an old soldier like me know?
