That makes him a good guy considering the general shakiness of ONI.
ONI and the UNSC have a lot to answer for, meddling with the internal affairs if the Convenant.
The interesting thing will be how Locke resolves his duty and the Osman’s agenda.
If the UNSC saw the master chief as an advantage over others, don’t you think they would support him so that he wouldn’t go awol or so that his mission would be over faster so that he could go back to fighting.

I think it wont be that black and white, his motives have usually always been very gray. We can’t really say he’s been a “good guy” in the past games. He is basically a troubled man, abducted at 6 and trained and experimented on till he became a Spartan and has just been following everyone’s orders untill halo 4. (The scene where he refuses to hand over Cortana) Halo 5 is meant to show him regaining his “humanity”. Maybe he will show his true side.

Halsey isn’t the bad guy and honestly we don’t know if Halsey will be a major plot point in Halo 5 until the current Halo: Escalation arc ends.

I think you idea is a bit erroneous and correct at the same time , it is assumed that the head teacher realizes deceit by the UNSC so the head teacher not only escapes cortana , then we can say that the bad guys are the UNSC and ONI .

You do know Hasley was kidnapped by Jul Mdama army and Jul maybe forcing Hasley to make some super weapon or something. So John is trying to save her from Jul. John is going to ask Hasley to fix Cortana and stop the ONI for doing something REALLY stupid. Just saying

I don’t think it makes him a bad guy, however, it doesn’t make good either. Jul M’dama isn’t exactly the greatest Sangheili to hang with, and I doubt he plans on letting Halsey live after he kills the humans.
Someone did mention that ONI is pretty shaky on the good bad scale, and that’s true, but at the same time, we’re playing a game from the side of the humans, so it’s going to be flawed and biased towards the humans.

so technically she wanted revenge on the unsc soooo… she the bad guy
He has his intentions, He is 99.99% likely to not be the bad guy.
I really think Halsey is Being very manipulative I really dont think she is that petty to want revenge sure she said that. But i think she has alternative motives for say what she did,
I think once she gets the upper hand on Jul she would likely turn on him and go back and find people she trust Chief, Thorn, Lasky and use what she find to help in the long run she does what she does to further humanity and gain knowledge
