Master Chief should talk less

I’ve been watching some Halo 4 and 5 cutscenes and I really noticed something that was bothering me since 343 took over Halo. Master Chief talks too much. He Isn’t the old chief anymore. I started playing Halo since I was 5/6 and Chief is my childhood hero and the thing that makes him so him is how mysterious he looks. In the worst situations, he would talk less and act more, I mean, can he be more badass than this? This makes chief one of the most badass characters (if not the most) in gaming, and I feel like he kinda lost it in 343i’s Halo. He talks too much, not allowing for us to be in his position as we were able to in the old Halos. In Halo Infinite, imo, he should return to his old personality, bringing to the veterans some good nostalgia and to the new players, the same sensation we had when we first started playing Halo.

I like the policy of no talking during gameplay and only during cutscenes. 343i said they want players to be able to tell their own stories, and the best way to do that is by lifting the burden of scripted storytelling out of the actual gameplay to allow for a more emergent, sandbox experience. Also, player expression through physical action allows for the development of the Chief to be tied to the actions of the player, which is a pretty good thing for an FPS like Halo.

I like that Chief found more of his voice in H4 and H5. I hope that continues in Infinite.

I can see 343i making chief have talk less to the level of CE to 3

I prefer 343’s handling of him. They added a layer to his character. So I’m hoping he doesn’t regress into his standard space marine self in Infinite.

I don’t know about talk less, but more badass dialogue would be great.

He talks more, not too much. He doesn’t spout off about nothingness. He carries a meaningful dialogue with a companion he’s known for a while in Halo 4, and his team he’s known since childhood in Halo 5.

I don’t understand this critique from people who dislike him talking more. Can he no longer shoot aliens as well since he says more things? Can he no longer beat down some hapless Grunt or put a bullet between an Elite’s eyes because he shows more character? He is just as badass, just as skilled, and just as deadly now as he was in Halo CE, 2 and 3, only he doesn’t carry a ‘I don’t give a crap’ persona anymore.
I can understand people’s initial surprise from his character shift in Halo 4, but I mean, he’s had 3 games of being rather flat, it’s about damn time he begins to show some meaningful character development. He’s still just as much of a force of destruction, but he actually emotes now.
I’d much rather have an engaging protagonist than a ‘lite-self-insert’ character.

It never bothered me that chief talked more in 4 and 5. As long as they keep it at the same level I have no problem with it

I prefer 343’s approach of actually bringing out his character like they do in books, plus even with the extra dialogue he gets in 4/5 he still doesnt talk alot.

I agree… I’ve been playing Halo since high school… From H1 to H5 there has been an evolution of sorts with the Master Chiefs character. Because he was one of the 1st Spartans created by Dr. Halsey all he’s ever realy known was war… And as the story line goes “he was good at it”. Starting in H4 WE begin to experience the inner struggle Master Chief goes through on a daily basis as he begins to express himself more in dialogue with other characters. Its ironic because Master Chief may be a badass super hero type but he still struggles with something as simple as who he REALLY is. This self identification is something alot of people IRL struggle with, especially gamers, because there are alot of gamers who use games to escape from their own realities. It makes sense for 343 to encapsulate on this (whether intentional or not). Basically telling the audience (players) that Master Chief may be someone (your name here) can aspire to become but; Even the role models we have in life can have doubts and fears. Its normal. Its human. Well played 343. Well played.

I’d love to see more of this inner struggle with Master Chief come to life in H6. And see more of his humanity surface as he gains closure. Can’t do that without dialogue

I would be okay if they took talking out while in gameplay but when it’s a cutscene I like when he talks a lot. Chief is a human being who has been trained to give orders and report his observations during and after battle. Yes, Chief didn’t talk a lot during the Bungie Era and that made him mysterious but it also made him bland in my opinion. Since 343 started having him talk more in both games and books I felt like he was an actual person under that armor and not just a machine. Which I believe is what 343 was aiming for.

I don’t see what the problem is when it comes to Chief talking. It’s not like he goes on a tangent about some unnecessary thing that bothers him. He gives intelligent, meaningful dialogue every time he talks. We learn something new about him every time he opens his mouth to speak. Was he cool as a mysterious, unknown, war machine? Of course; he was the most badass protagonist of any game series; he was a half a ton walking death machine that snaps necks and limbs as casually as one sips on water or tea. However, he was made in a time where story and character can mold easily and only the story really mattered, not really the character. Now, people adore characters with charisma and promise; so a silent Chief isn’t going to cut it.

Besides; I like what 343i did with Chief’s character. They made him relate-able, they made him someone you WANT to be because he’s someone you ARE; a human being with problems and responsibilities you struggle to keep up with. Someone who has been betrayed and has struggled with the hurt of not only losing their best friend, but finding out and having to cope with the fact they not only DIDN’T die, but have now turned against them and everything they stand for. The Master Chief has to make a very important decision, and it’s going to be a hard call for him.

Does he stand with his best friend and turn against the ones he swore to protect?

Does he stand as Humanity’s Shield and Sword and defend them from a new threat they once considered an ally?

Ultimately he can choose to do neither. He can choose to be fed up with being everyone’s ‘hero’ and ‘puppet on strings’ and he can choose to be fed up trying to fix what he can’t. He can opt to become full rogue; but I doubt he will. He’s never been one to back down from a challenge.

Regardless of the choice he makes; Blue Team WILL stand with him. They always have and always will. I mean, they went AWOL with him to go FIND Cortana in the first place; pretty sure they’d do anything for him.

I like Master Chief talking. It gives us even more depth into his character and gives Steve Downes more than 2 pages of lines to read. However, if Master Chief was going to be silent, I would like to see something like what Metro games do. Artyom is silent in those games, but writes down his thoughts in a note that you could find in the level. That way, you can be immersed but still learn more about the character.

Him talking is nice and all, but I think there should be less. I’ve always liked the “Strong, Silent type” characters Halo has had.

i loved when master chief talked

Nah, he’s fine the way he is now.

He just needs to have a good writing. I think he was good in Halo 4 but he didn’t have a good dialogue in Halo 5.

Yeah, and the delivery on some of the lines was not very good. “Data Centre” "it’s…unique

Ye it was a bit dissapointing bit i kinda give H4 a credit on chief, even though some of his lines were not good.

I was just thinking of dumb things Chief has said and here’s one.

when Cortana and Chief enter the control room in CE. Cortana is trying to warn Chief about the Flood. But Chief’s “Wha-? I don’t understand” gets me everytime. Not exactly a bad line but the delivery is hilarious especially when you combine the hilarious animation that comes with it. Cracks me up everytime.
