Master Chief Revealed

I thought 343i wanted to keep Chiefs identity unknown so that players would be able to connect more
with him as a character and a hero.

But the Scanned trailer revealed a lot about his identity.
Personally, I kind of liked it more when he was just the voice and the armor but now I feel like I identify with him less.

What do you guys think? By the way the Scanned trailer was still amazing!

He’s always had an identity, it just isn’t shown very well in the games. He’s quite a fleshed out character in the books though. 343i are going for that same fleshed out character in Halo 4.

You’ve clearly never read the books.

He has had a known backstory for a long time, however that shouldn’t make him any less of a hero.

We already knew a lot about him, we have seen his kid self and we have seen the back of his head.

> You’ve clearly never read the books.

Clearly…, this post is directed more to people who don’t read them and just play.

I thinks its a good thing they’re showing all this. I want to see the man behind the helmet. I want them to portray him the same as in the books. I could care less about putting myself in the armor.

They didn’t show Chief’s face in the Scanned trailer. They only showed his past, which has already been revealed.

Then you kind of shouldn’t have an opinion on what they’re revealing considering everything shown in that trailer minus the halo 4 stuff was in the fall of reach 10 years ago

From a perspective purely from the games Master Chief John 117 is pretty 2 dimensional, very very little depth, and you find that easier to connect with?

I’ve never been a fan of John-117 being a “faceless hero” and the thought of the developers that your own personality and image supplanted that of their own and his. This made me think that people believed John was only a tool, a military asset who’s only concerned with killing. Nonetheless I still knew better by reading the novels of the past and could identify with a man deeply rooted in those who fight alongside him and those who he’s sworn to defend.

This revealing side introduced by the marketing is such a treat for me, and lets me identify with a man who I’ve only seen in the flesh as a child.

And yet I still kind of…, do.

Then it’s your own fault for having the lack of knowledge to know better, 343 isn’t ruining anything story wise.

We’ve seen visualizations of the Chief before. There’s also a full description of him in various Halo books. But 343i have a rules that it’s acceptable to visualize him as a child, where players are not familiar with him. But they won’t do the same for him as an adult, because that it when most players are familiar with him. Many gamers find that they enjoy vicariously living through the Master Chief and his adventure, so showing his face as an adult will forever shatter that bond.

Well yes, I actually thought there was depth to him even though he was just armor and a voice but I understood the “hero”
ideal in more detail without having to be distracted by the identity of the hero.

> Personally, I kind of liked it more when he was just the voice and the armor but now I feel like I identify with him less.

I never understood this logic. Why is it better for the main character of a game to be a mute and hollow shell of a man than one with a complex backstory giving him a motivation? I personally would want all of my characters to be more three dimensional, Master Chief included.

Haha, please save the guilt trip. I’ve never read the Halo fiction and have no shame in that fact.

And I never said that they were “ruining anything story wise.” You seem to be exaggerating.

did bungie have his eye color brown as a boy and 343 have his eye color blue or hazel or brown as a boy?

DjBoogieBear has a point.

For those of us who’ve read the books and the comics, chief’s face being reviled isn’t a big deal as most of you guys make it.
And in reality, if you think it’s ruining the story for you, then I suggest you pick up a few books and comics. Hell, the Halo 3 Super Bowl ad showed Chief’s face as a kid.

If anything it’s a good thing that they’re adding more depth to him in the games. Master Chief doesn’t deserve to be some cliche superhero that is emotionless and has no past.
