Pure speculation here that will probably be proven wrong with the first bits of info we get on the game.
Why would ONI want to hunt Chief down? I’m sure there could be a reason but with all the talk about John being replaced, it sounds like John isn’t a part of ONI’s plans at all. They assumed he was dead and went ahead with their own ideas. I don’t see this changing with Chief coming back because what additional information about himself can he provide that they already couldn’t get out of Halsey?
John is always at the center of attention and will ALWAYS be the hero, but this time around it looks like humanity will be trying to give him the backseat. John will prove to humanity again that he’s the only one who can save everyone.

If Chief is going coo-coo for Coaco Puffs, he may very well represent a threat to humanity. I think there is good evidence to point towards potential influence by an inherited geas from the Ur-Didact that leaked in his Flood corruption onto Chief. ONI has quite a collection of Forerunner records regarding the Ur-Didact and I wouldn’t be shocked if they felt something would be wrong after the Librarian influenced Chief and Chief may have told them he could hear the Ur-Didact in his head.

Yeah, he shouldn’t be the only one who can save everyone.

Why not? That’s how it’s always been, everyone else has their usefulness, but John is the one who saves the day.
> Why not? That’s how it’s always been, everyone else has their usefulness, but John is the one who saves the day.
Because it is cliche to have just one big hero who is a pretty cool guy and kills aliens and isn’t afraid of nothing. Why not mix things up a little?

There are plenty of ways to make it interesting. Hasn’t Halo been interesting so far?

Not if the overall outcome is going to be so predicable. Oh no, bad things are happening and Chief single-handily saves the day, yawn. It was nice seeing him fail in Halo 4, that shouldn’t be a one-off event.

He still lived to the end and saved the day. They made it interesting in 4 and they can make it interesting again in 5.
The Master Chief has… and probably will… be the catalyst for victory, but he is not the sole proprietor of the victory. He is at his core a single soul… and only one soul could turn the tides of the Flood… Moses… by the biblical scripture.
“Then the god said… build an Ark because a Flood is coming…” (Primordial to the Master Builder)
However John has always been the one, to cause the most ripple-effect in war… the Great Schism… for example.
So in-terms of John being the stoic hero… to take down the big bad… its way to cliche to think he is the only difference between victory and defeat. Think of a team of soccer/football players… one person cannot take on a whole team.
I’m going to read the posts above mine later, but I wanted to say this.
I don’t think ONI is “hunting down” the Chief, nor do I think this new character is supposed to.
But if either of those scenarios are the case, the reason could be because of the genetic evolution the Librarian put Chief through, or because of his encounters with, and information he has on, the Forerunners (The Didact, Librarian, 343GS, terminals, etc.)
I suspect, based on things I’m way too tired to get into, that the UNSC, even ONI, won’t go after Chief. They’d probably try to find him if he goes AWOL, but I don’t care too much to speculate on the moment.
> He still lived to the end and saved the day. They made it interesting in 4 and they can make it interesting again in 5.
He lived, but failed to save New Phoenix or Cortana and failed to kill the Didact. Chief saving the day by himself isn’t interesting.

He has always been the only line between humanities extinction and victory. Not saying he can take on anything by himself, but he is without a doubt the most important character in the whole series.
The series will always focus on him and he will always be the good guy, and for good reason. Millions of people like Halo because of Master Chief. He’s not the only thing good about Halo, but he is the most important thing that can never die until the series is over.

No one knows where the Didact is and Chief saved the entire world. New Phoenix was lost but that made it more interesting, it showed that he couldn’t save everyone.
The Didact is the one who failed.

John can’t take on a room full of 1 million brutes by himself, but he’s also the only one who can save humanity.

Why is he the only one who can do so?

Because he’s the main protagonist of the series. Everyone else plays their part but it’s all focused on Chief.
It’s not really a bad thing. It’s just how it goes.

Why should that still be the case?

Why shouldn’t it? He’s the main focus and you play as him. It would feel off if you played an entire 8 hour campaign just to have someone else save the day.

You should take some time to play “Spec Ops: The Line”. A story that clearly shows what masculinity and heroism can do to people who think they have to act a certain way.

I’m not saying that other stories aren’t as good. I fully enjoy a story where the hero doesn’t succeed.
I don’t know much about that game but I do know enough about Halo to say that it wouldn’t be right to have Chief become an enemy or to step down as the main hero of the series.
I’m not saying Chief should just stomp anything that gets in his way. He should have some serious conflicts that truly test him as a character.
