So I saw, when looking through Steve Downes (The Master Chief’s voice actor) that for Halo’s 1 through 4, his character is listed as Master Chief, each and every single time. But for Halo 5, it says John-117–not Master Chief. I heard it was confirmed somewhere that due to going AWOL, he would have lost his rank as Master Chief Petty Officer. Any thoughts on what this could mean? Does the AWOL instantly mark him a traitor, and him losing his rank as MCPO is a result of the alleged “traitor” he is now being marked as in the Halo universe? What could he possibly be a traitor for, if not for his going AWOL?
I know, more questions then theories. If anyone could confirm that the Chief (or I guess just John-117 now) has lost his rank, love to see it. What do y’all make of this?
That’s a good question, actually. Who knows if he’s still ranked ‘Master Chief’ in Halo 5.

IN the first audio log He calls John chief, though i think some people are taking to much stock in Halo Follower (nothing against him)
Is it wrong that whenever I read the tittle to this thread my mind automatically says, “Masta Chief No Mo”?
I wonder if the halo follower dude thinks Master Chief is John-117’s name? I cant find anywhere on any 343 released media where they aren’t referring to him by his rank. If he was in fact stripped of his rank would he not be referred to as “traitor” or in a more degrading manner? Master Chief = Master Chief Petty officer.
It is possible that going AWOL is an act of treason and I’ve read that you do lose rank, but I doubt everyone will stop calling him Master Chief.
Well, Wikipedia says that if someone is AWOL for more tan thirty days, he’ll be branded a traitor, and therefore will lose his Rank, face court martial and even death. So he probably lost his Rank as soon as he was branded a traitor.

might mean nothing I mean it is kind of weird that a lot of people don’t actually know his actual name. maybe they’re just trying to make that more public.
