Ok, I’ve been a die-hard Halo fan from the very beginning and have loved each of the different games for their own reasons. I don’t want to be like the rest of the haters who have already passed judgment on how BAD Halo 4 is going to be, just because they are stuck in the mud of previous games.
But, that said, I do share much of the same anxiety-- first because this is the launching point of a brand new story line, and second, because I had come to know, love, and trust Bungie as the experienced makers of Halo. I don’t know if any of 343 will read this thread, but I hope someone does. I believe 343 has the ability to continue that legacy of quality and bring it forward to the next generation. But, I also believe that there are certain key elements that MUST remain true in order to satisfy, rather than scare away, committed fans like myself. (speaking specifically from a graphical and design perspective)
Ok, I love the look of the new maps and weapons. The detail and design are superb. However, the design that will make or break the whole game (as no doubt 343 is aware) is the look of Master Chief. I know the goal is to make the armor more functional, and honestly I love the updates over the majority of the body. BUT THE HELMET IS KEY. The helmet and especially the visor express the whole personality and character of John (since facial expression is off the table). And since, according to the storyline, the armor has to be a continuance of Halo3’s model, any significant changes to the geometry of the helmet would throw up a major red flag for many fans. If something as fundamental as the look and identity of MC can seemingly change so drastically, it begs the question: “What else will be different?”
The two major differences in the helmet’s shape that I noticed were the visor and the curved top of the helmet. I would avoid making any significant changes to these two areas, since they are the most distinctive focal points of MC’s “face”. The “forehead” has always been more pointed, but it looks too tall, thick and rounded for Halo4’s MC. It’s always had an almost “sporty/ motorcycle helmet” look.
Again, changes in the armor itself isn’t quite as big of an issue, but fundamental changes in the shape of the helmet WILL BE NOTICED. So far, this is what makes me most nervous about the new game, and I would wager that I’m not alone in that. So I hope someone in 343 will take notice, and re-evaluate.
