I recently became aware that Halo has a very good story and lore behind it. I decided I wanted to experience that story firsthand so I starting doing some research on what order I should take playing the games, so I could absorb the story in the order it was intended. However, something became apparent to me during my search that was very disappointing. Some games, essential to the storyline, were available only on a console. I am a PC gamer. So now I am left with a dilemma. Is there any other way I can experience the story fully beside the games? Am I going to have to watch gameplay and walkthroughs like RDR2? Or should I get a console? Please help.
Hmm that’s a tough one. You can always read the books, but i confess that ive only played the games. I love the halo franchise, so i would say pick up a used console - perhaps an old xbox one. Black friday (if you live in the US) will have the xbox one s for $199, which isnt terrible. Then buy the master chief collection and halo reach. Play through Reach first because it’s a bit of a prequel to the other games. Or just get the master chief collection and start with combat evolved. If you know nothing or very little about the halo story, combat evolved is the best place to start in my not so humble opinion. It has also the mystery and surprises if you havent been spoiled already. Reach will provide some back story once youre more up to speed.
I mean, obviously the best way to get story is through playing the games. So if you have the money, it’d be cool to pick up Master Chief Collection and an Xbox One S during the sales soon and play through that. Think of it this way, you can also pick up RDR2.
If that’s just not affordable right now (which is fair enough) the next best thing would be to watch gameplays of the games in order of release. Always do order of release.
Also, FYI, you can pick up both Halo Wars games on the windows store if you’re into RTSs. They are very simple but fun and have a story mostly isolated from the rest of the games.

Thanks for the help!
I guess I will just have to buy a console then. I do live in the US, so like you said, Black Friday will be a good time to look into it. I hear the Master Chief collection had some problems with it though? Are there any problems with it that you know of or does it seem fine?

MCC has some glitches and problems (mostly in Multiplayer), but they are being patched out in a series of feature updates; consequently though this means there is a huge download, like 100GB or something so be prepared for that.
Campaigns run better than anything else in MCC in my experience. They should be fine.

If you want to play the Halo games n chronological order, it goes like this.
Halo Wars
Halo Reach
Halo Combat Evolved/Halo Combat Evolved Anniversary
Halo 2/Halo 2 Anniversary and finish the metropolis level.
Halo 3:ODST but dont watch the Epilogue
Halo 2/Halo 2 Anniversary finish the game
Halo 3: ODST Epilogue
Halo 3
Halo 4
Halo Spartan Assault
Halo Spartan Strike
Halo 4 Spartan Ops
Halo 5: Guardians
Halo Wars 2
You can play them in any order that you want, but this is the chronological order. Definitely get a console! Halo is an amazing video game series, you won’t be disappointed!
If money is your concern, there are plenty of Youtube videos where you can watch the play through. It’s not as much fun as playing, but if you want to dive into the lore without dropping cash on a console, that would be a real possibility

This is true as well. I will say that the amount of content in the master chief collection is pretty awesome. You are essentially getting 4 games, 2 remasters (CEA and H2A), and for another 5 bucks ODST which is pretty good on its own.

So basically I would need to purchase an Xbox with an ample amount of storage right?

Yeah I think I would much rather play the games, it just comes down now to finding the best price for things. How low have you seen the price of the Master Chief collection go?

I really appreciate this man, I really enjoy doing things in order so I don’t miss or ruin anything, I guess its OCD or whatever lol. This is really helpful. Btw, are the halo wars games worth it story wise? Because I only really want to play the games chronologically that give meaningful details to the story. Do the Halo Wars games provide anything like that because if not I would rather skip them. I don’t play the type of game that they are very often anyway.

Halo Wars has an AMAZING story! Definitely worth it! Halo War 2 also plays a big part, so definitely watch the story. I won’t say more or else I might spoil something for you. Hope you enjoy the Halo franchise like the rest of us!

My friend just bought a digital copy of it for 30$ on Xbox live. Also to answer your other question, MCC takes up a lot of space. I would shoot for a 1TB or 2TB storage console.

I picked up an Xbox One a few years ago with MCC pre-downloaded for $400. So I essentially got a smart TV plus four games (five if you count the $5 ODST DLC). I have no idea what an Xbox One with MCC would cost now, but certainly less with the new consoles being released
I’d say get a console just because the games are really fun but as far as story, specifically the first 3 games, watching the cutscenes are all you really need. With the original trilogy that is. You could always find an emulator I guess but idk any that run well, I tend to avoid emulators.
The books and games are part of the same universe (obvs) but tell very different actual stories. The core games (Halo 1-5) tell the story of the Master Chief saving Earth. The other games and the books (with one or two exceptions) focus on the “how we got here” and the “what happened next”. They flesh the fiction out. but the magnitude of it all comes down to the core games. So there’s continuity across the different media, but without the core games, the books and the other games won’t give you the full picture.

Watching the cut scenes on youtube is easier, but I feel like playing through the game is so much more rewarding and immersive. Gives some context for how you get to each cut scene.

Do yourself a favor and don’t play Halo 5’s campaign.

I wish Halo 5 was more than what it was, but it’s still canon and essential to understanding any media that comes after it, including books like Bad Blood and games like Halo Wars 2. Halo Infinite will inevitably build off of it, so you can’t really ignore it entirely. Whether or not to buy it is another question, buy you definitely need to know the story if you’re gonna continue building your knowledge of the Halo universe.
I’d recommend reading the Fall of Reach before playing through the games. It was the first piece of Halo media released (even before Halo CE) and provides context for the Spartan program and the events leading up to Halo CE. You can play through the game without reading this first fine, but you’ll notice subtle references to the book as you play through the games.
