But I wanted to ask which martial arts fighting technique do Spartans like Chief and Fred utilize in normal Hand-to-Hand combat or intense sparring sessions? Do they use SAMBO, Krav Maga, Aikido, basic Karate, etc…?
Is it stated anywhere in the novels where Spartans are said to utilize some peculiar martial skills in combat against the enemy? Also what about the SIIIs as well?
And if I may, what do you think should the SIVs be proficient in H2H training, to be more lethal against the alien enemies?
if i remember correctly, the books never state anything specific and just state that they train in and master all forms of hand to hand combat.
in one of the books the chief uses his h2h training while fighting a brute that grabbed him and was wrestling with him but thats all i remember at the moment.
aaah. But mastering all forms of martial arts will take a whole lotta time and energy. Whereupon some martial arts are completely different from one and another (in movements and philosophy) and require extensive tutelage to master.
Surely there will be some ‘central technique’ for the Spartans to optimise themselves to it and perfect it in time.
It’s never stated in the books what types of martial arts are used, but if I had to guess, it would include a mix of muay thai, karate, jiu jitsu, kickboxing, and maybe tae kwon do as well. It’s stated that they have hundred of hours worth of training in hand-to-hand combat… That said, I doubt that they are MMA super-champs, since they only trained until they were 14 years old. Not counting brief training inbetween missions.
Spartans are not trained in a singular martial art. Much like “the System” and “the Way of the Intercepting Fist,” true mortal combat is an amalgamation of multiple techniques formed to fit the individual and their inherent traits.
I’d assume it’d be similar to modern MMA with aspects of Krav Maga and Kali maybe add in Aikido for good measure and emphasize boxing and wrestling. Other than that the only other thing to learn is combat shooting.
I know this is a bit of a necro, but since it’s been brought back, I thought I’d add some information that’s been given since this question was posed.
Specifically for the Spartan-IVs, this is stated on page 40 of the Official Spartan Field Manual,
Every Spartan-IV candidate has basic training in hand-to-hand combat from their previous years of military service, but Spartans are required to learn several fighting styles, as different methods work for different situations. This can mean redirecting the force of a massive Brute’s punch with Aikido, disarming an Insurrectionist rebel with Jui-Jitsu, or taking down a Covenant Elite in close quarters with Krav Maga. Though this may sound daunting, your augmentation gives you the ability to learn new fighting techniques from your opponent–effectively acting as an enhanced “muscle memory” that makes observing and memorizing techniques much easier. To this end, you will be paired with a Spartan who has already mastered the techniques you must learn.

Noice, although it doesn’t explain much on the S-II and IIIs, which was what the OP was asking. ( Me over here sad that taekwondo wasn’t mentioned, as it focuses a lot on movement and CQC)

True, it doesn’t specifically mention the S-IIs or -IIIs, but I would imagine that if the Spartan-IVs are being trained this way, that the prior generations would be as well. The Spartan-IIs would be the most nebulous since their training revolved around fighting humans, but by the time the S-IIIs were trained, I could see these techniques being incorporated.
Certainly, if the S-IIs and S-IIIs weren’t originally trained for these techniques, they would be currently.

Yeah, although CQC isn’t focused on to an extreme in today’s military, it would still be taught to a point. So I don’t think that it was focused on incredibly
