I am pretty sure that the only way to get the Mark VI armor on Halo 4 is to do the campaign solo on legendary, another thing I heard is that, if you play some of the campaign solo on legendary and some co-op on legendary, you can also get the armor unlocked. Hope this helps you.

As someone who did the entire campaign on Co-Op, I can confirm that this statement is false. As long as the missions are completed on legendary, solo or co-op, you will get the armor.
