Marines and NPC Allies AI

I really do hope that 343 makes the Marines and other allied AI actually competent. In Halo 4 they were were a bunch of bumbling imbeciles who couldn’t fire straight and had the survival instinct of a snail.

Keeping those morons alive on any difficulty was a challenge.

The Halo 2 AI was good on the other hand. What do you guys think?

I’ve always thought we could alieviate some of these AI -Yoinkups- with squad control mechanics. If the player could tell his marines where to go, the AI could be awful, but still useful.

yeah especially when im trying to give all my marines rocket launchers when driving the 5 seater in halo 5. They’re getting in the driver seat and getting in other cars. Soo bad

Yeah, I’ve been hoping for actually competent marines forever.

Funny thing is if you betray them and they turn on you, they suddenly become the most dangerous enemies in the game and can drop you in an instant, lol.

-I think they should give them regenerating hit points that they regenerate between fights,
-hardwire them to get in the driver’s seat (as opposed to the gunner) of the vehicle you’re driving if they are holding a rocket launcher because come on…it’s opbvious what I’m trying to do so just make it easy!
-just make them so they aren’t SHOCKINGLY bad, lol

I’ve never really paid attention to them. You could eliminate them for all I care.

I think a command system would help with this. Imagine holding down a particular button to order your squad to attack/move to/pick up/use whatever you’re aiming at. It has a canonical explanation in the form of HUD markers, too. It would be especially good if both Chief and Locke had their own permanent team as hinted in the H2:A cutscenes featuring Locke. Chief has Blue Team, Locke has his ONI Spartan squad, perhaps consisting of Buck, Romeo and Macer. It would add more strategy and tactical depth to the campaign, which is otherwise just ‘shoot at the bad guys’.

I thought Reach would feature a command system, because it had the fireteam mechanic and it was based around a squad, but sadly not. I’d like to see a fireteam mechanic in Halo 5, but an improved one where you can choose which marines to accompany you and what weapons they use.

Yeah the marines AI its pretty bad, no wonder the covenant was always winning the war. XD

The Spartan-IVs weren’t bad in Halo 4, but that’s pretty much only because they had shields and could stay alive so much longer. The regular marines and ONI security were still pretty pathetic.

Having a command system as an integral part of the gameplay sounds like a huge drag.

Always thought the marines were supposed to be super bad. Doesn’t bother me too much after all these years.

Why? I wish people would explain themselves when they say things like this.

It’s new, it’s different, it requires a little more thought, planning, and replayability when it comes to gameplay.

Wack-a-mole, rail shooter FPS games are a dime a dozen (looking at you, COD). Those games are out there if you want to play them, but if H5 wants to mix things up a little bit with squad-oriented gameplay while preserving the core of the Halo first person shooter experience, why not?

Let them get in the turret for the gauss hog and they have laser accuracy.

I also found it greatly disapointing trying to rescue and maintain the lives of the marines in HALO 4. Great campaign, but in the last leg of the level where Cheif is reunited with Lasky (Forerunner, or Infinity), I have to struggle sometimes to keep a few alive to fend off the Promethans. On the other hand, the HALO 2 marines were just unstopable! I think HALO 4’s marines and ONI security forces looked all badass, but that’s as far as it went, sadly enough!

Lore wise the Marines are supposed to be bad*** and competent soldiers. They’re made bad purposely because the player is meant to do all the fighting. You can’t have a bunch of AI soldiers doing all the work.
