I’m sure I’m not the only one here who’s been suffering from Marines, and friendly NPCs in general, getting themselves into tight situations and going oppa-suicide-style.
Seeing that corporal with his Rocket Launcher mindlessly charging into a hunter trying to melee it, riding with that Sargent and being driven towards a Shade’s line of fire or getting killed by that ODST’s Fuel Rod gun, just because you felt like crossing his sight, can get really frustrating, especially if you’re a perfectionist like me who doesn’t leave a man behind. And that mission in Reach where you have to evacuate the civilians from New Alexandrian? Oh, man. Although, I must admit, giving them powerful weapons and watching the chaos, especially against Elites, can be fun.
Still, I must say that Halo 2’s Marines AI was very good, regarding vehicular gameplay. They could handle their own (and kick -Yoink-) with a Warthog and take some covies down with them.
So, simply put: I’d like the ability to order my fire-team to attack, follow, fallback or hold position, at the very least. And trust me, it’s for their own good.
Don’t hate on the Marines man, they’ve always been pretty useless lol. If anything, it’s the Arbiter, Elites, and Johnson that do good. I usually use the Marines as cannon fodder and just kill everything else.

See, that’s the problem: I can’t let go of them. I’m not asking for an increased health or damage or even an improved AI, just a way to bring them back home in one piece.
I hope Chips Dabbo is back, or whatever that marines name was. It was funny, in the beta two of the spartan voices sound like Nathan Fillion and David Cross to me.

This thread is about NPC’s AI, not cameos. Although, I thought I heard them, too. I also think I heard Buck’s voice from ODST. Not entirely sure, though.
I said to my wife several times that I thought I heard Fillion during some of the callouts. She thought that one of the voices was his as well.
No man is left behind. No matter how small, or insignificant. I shall not leave a grunt behind, or a jackal, a marine or an ODST. I will kill them for fun on occasions, but never leave them behind.
When you strive to keep your allies safe, you earn tales. I have the tale of ODST, we both survived the long trek that was the ARK. His name you ask?
OMEGA
DEATH
SNIPER
TROOPER
ODST for short. He no scoped brutes from here to installation 04. (Well, at least the part of the ARK that was repairing it)

Ahh, the one with the red strips? I managed to get him and his entire team through that level alive (took me some time, though) after giving them 2 Snipers, a Beam Rifle and Fuel Rod gun. We hijacked some choppers and a Prowler and kept kickin’ -Yoink- till we got to that Scorpion and blew everything all the way to the end of the mission.
Good times, indeed.

My apologies for veering from the nature of the thread. Also, Buck is voiced by Nathan Fillion.
As far as the Marines AI is concerned, I have never strived to keep them alive or really take the time to even notice them. If they could improve the way the Marine/ODSTs take cover, I would like that I suppose. Sometimes they just stand around getting shot, not returning fire.

At the very best, they would crouch while standing in the open and getting shot. I still remember that time on Halo 2’s Delta Halo where the game saved just before that ODST shot his rocket launcher at me. I had to replay it on legendary.
i would like better ai in general, enemy and friendly.
Halo 2 marines were amazing, rapid fire, superb accuracy, and just geniuses when it came to the battlefield. I think it was on Outskirts where I went to grab a rocket and a sniper on that part where the phantom drops offs ghosts and all I saw was the marines slaughtering elites with battle rifles, and then I gave them a rocket launcher and they went to town on the ghosts, and boy do they do major damage on delta halo with sniper rifles. All I hear is grunt birthday parties and elites yell out being capped right in the face. Impressive to say the least, same for H4. What happened in Reach? It’s hard to recall ever killing anything on there own. They truly did suck in Reach. In H3 they were ok, I found them unable to dodge grenades which always resulted in there death. I wonder how their health system works. Does anyone know? Is it basically a Spartan without its shield or what? Maybe the Mythic skulls can give them more health, does anyone know?
The marines have never been good as the game is meant to make you most of the work however it would be nice to see them improved, other than giving them brains another solution is to implement a better cover-based system for them, it’s how they would fight in reality and they may stop going out into the open and getting themselves killed.
I’ve suffered too much from Kat already, but I would like to be able to protect my AI buddies more easily. I care about them all, even the Grunts
One time I killed my whole squad of marine in Reaches ‘cause they bein’ stupid.
They need to make the AI better drivers in this game
