So I just kind of thought of this. Would the marines be better at fighting enemies (in-game) if they fire their weapons more aggressively and rapidly (such as actually going full auto with the automatic weapons in CQC) and throwing grenades more often? Or should they overall be more intelligent and fight smart (such as taking cover more often, using tactics and strategies, identifying weaknesses, teamwork, etc…). What do you think?
i want them smarter, not more aggressive.
the marines shouldn’t do the work for the player.
that’s why i want them smarter, a lot smarter & and i want them to finally make a driver’s license.
Unfortunately we rather debate the -Yoink!- of sprinting in A FPS rather than seeing advance forms player interaction. The countless blabbing like zombies for skilled base multilayer and see technological improvements to key concept like A.I and storytelling but hey I might bitter right. In Halo 4 the one thing that railed me up was how pathetic the the marines where and don’t get me started on the Spartans.
They could potentially make different “personalities” for AI. So some Marines could be very aggressive, while some could be more tactical and intelligent, with the latter being the most common.
This also brings the idea of different types of Marines having different skills. Every one of them could have the same base skills and behavior, with some having higher values in certain areas. For example, one Marine could be very skilled with vehicle operation while another could be a better precision shooter. Small variations could go a long way towards making realistic and intelligent AI.

I heard that programming AI can be tough so I don’t really know about that. We’ll have to wait and see what the Xbox One can offer. Maybe at the next E3 they’ll talk about how they introduced these vast improvements, such as “next gen” AI.
I think they could do it fairly easily. For example, there are already different classes of Elites that have different attributes associated with their differing appearances. The Marines could have the same thing done behind the scenes without a visual change.
I had a thought the other day about what they could do with regard to marines…
I was playing Reach and noticed during the campaign, you sort of ‘recruited’ fireteams at certain points of the campaign… What this got me thinking was that when you had a squad of NPCs on your fireteam, their name and rank was displayed adjacent to the radar… I thought (this would only be applicable for kinect only) that you could call out their names and give them a basic set of orders via voice command. Like: “Lopez: covering fire” or “Reid: take cover” and “Anderson: Flank”. Nothing extravagant but enough to have feel like some tactical advantage can be gained. Kind of like what Bioware did with ME3.
The AI has got a lot better through each iteration of Halo but sometimes NPCs do really stupid things and I have wished countless times that I could have done something to prevent their demise (other than reverting back to last save and try and do something different).
I have no idea how you could implement the same thing without kinect. The Back button doesn’t really get used for anything other than for weapon details so perhaps that could be utilised in its stead?

This reminds me of the elites in Halo 2; I remember during the first mission you play as the Arbiter there was a designated elite who always seemed to throw grenades more often than the other elites.
To the OT, how intelligent/aggressive the marines are doesn’t matter as much as how much health they have. The marines in CE and 3 are very different, yet they are still very capable AI because they had a lot of health to protect them. Halo 3’s marines were especially good because they had more health than the player, and also had their health recharge (it takes 3 melee’s to kill them, but if you melee a marine twice and left him alone for a few seconds his health would recharge to 2 melees.) If marines don’t have enough health, they don’t live long enough to do anything.
I don’t see why they shouldn’t be able to do both, I would like my marines to be useful for once other than being bullet sponges.
Maybe have different types of marine? With all the different types of covenant the same old marines do get abit boring after awhile.
I would like the marines to be weaker so the covenant can seem dangerous.
