Map theft prevention ingame, and on Waypoint

This has been rather an old subject that me and my friends have dealt with, that has been an issue with past Halo games. With the introduction of customs browsers, it has made finding games and maps significantly easier, which is good and helps the population and longevity of the game. I cannot deny that. Back in the day making exclusive maps with your friends and clan mates was always a fun way to socialize and train between competitive modes or raids or really anything. Or just generally showing off maps we are proud of. I like being able to play said map and share it with others, but when someone takes something you and your friends have put countless hours and revisions and testing into, and obtain it even when the file is private and shouldn’t be accessed and then claim it as their own, infuriates me. I’m not sure if an overhaul of Waypoint would be more specific for locking maps or forge items away, but I think Infinite should really address that. Halo 5 for example does a good job at this, making your game modes and maps private without being accessible unless you’re the creator or you have friends that have copies. But even then sometimes they can still be nabbed through waypoint. Which is really odd and frustrating. I know this seems like a rant but something like this is very important to me and a good bit of people I know. I just hope that another prevention method could be made for a game I feel will have an amazing and over-the-top forge mode. Please leave your thoughts on this below…

Yep I was quite surprised how easy it was to ‘misappropriate’ someone else’s work.

I found an awesome remake of Beaver Creek - made some very minor changes - and then clicked save.

Months later someone congratulated me on the remake! I had no idea that it was listed on my file-share with me as author! All I did was remove some power ups and weapons so we could play our weekly game of FFA shotties.

Hardly seems fair to the original creator.

They definitely need some watermark type system where the original author is permanently displayed up front. And a link to the original work would be a good idea.

Feels like something that could be resolved simply with an ‘Edited By:’ section on the Map details.

So that Beaver Creek remake with the power-ups removed should say
Author: OriginalAuthor
Edited By: Darwi, Darwi’s Friends…

I thought every halo had this already?

Yeah I was thinking that while I wrote it.
Regardless it needs to be implemented in a way that when a map is overwritten, it keeps the original author.

It is that way, to some extent. The more the map gets cycled through hands or is edited without a network connection or this or that it ends up becoming marked “owned by: So and So” whom was not the original creator. I’ve even seen maps with the Owner and Editor marks blank.

I just feel like it should be tracked better and correctly to better represent the original authors. (It also seems that when a map is bookmarked, and then edited by someone, or a second player in the game saves as new, it overwrites the author properties too.)

I make a big deal out of this because it’s even gotten to the point of cyber bullying and it’s ridiculous to feel like you can’t even use your creations privately without somebody hunting it down for themselves or their clan to dissect and steal assets or overwrite it for their own.

If I had set something to public, even if it was something I spent tons of time on, and others grabbed it to play it with their friends or improve it then all power to them. That’d make me happy, but if I made sure it wasn’t searchable and accessible, I’d be upset :man_shrugging:
