Map packs used to be an event

Does anybody else remember the days of Halo 3, when Bungie would announce their forthcoming map packs months in advance? Not only that, but the hype would be incredible. They would tease information over the months and create an atmosphere of hype unrivaled by today’s releases. They would even give early access to special Bungie.net users who spotted the codes first, doing things like hiding them in the URL of the Weekly Updates.

The hype up to the Mythic Map Pack was incredible. I remember anticipating that for months, scouring Bungie.net for codes, discussing it with random people I met in Matchmaking, and even going so far as to send one of the Bungie employees a PM about it, hoping to gain even more insight. I remember that, just to be a jerk, I created a thread that said simply “First person to PM me will get a Mythic code!”. Within minutes, I got over a hundred PMs, with many people begging me for the code.

If I remember right, many people even bought the special edition of Halo Wars just for that early access to the Mythic Map Pack. People were really excited about the maps. The pack was an event.

We can compare this to today’s depressing releases. The Majestic Map Pack, coming out in four days, was just announced officially yesterday. 343 Industries has given us some pretty good footage of it and insight into its creation. They’ve got a plan to hype it up over the next few days, according to the newest Halo Bulletin.

But even still, the atmosphere is not one of undeniable anticipation. There are very few posts on these forums about the Majestic Map Pack. I would wager that if I posted a thread saying I have codes for the maps, people would politely ask, but my inbox would not be swarmed with people begging for the maps.

So what happened? Do you guys remember this the same way I do? More importantly, do you miss the way older games built up to map packs? Do you want that incredible anticipation back?

Crimson DLC Playlist: ~200 Players.

Explained. Totally garbage maps. ALL DLC should have been on the disc, since it’s already made months ahead of time.

More people play on Rag or Exile 80% of the time of 1 hour playing.

You do realize that 343i promised that the Crimson Map Pack would be released in December, Majestic in February and Castle in April. They even announced it before November was over. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JeMNUPFlNxY

I’m not sure how much more earlier you would have Three Hundred and Forty-Three Industries announce future DLC. They even announced DLC in general that came with the War Games Map Pass when you bought your copy of Halo 4 Limited Edition which was announce before E3 2012.

Explained??? I didn’t ask for an explanation. I asked for thoughts.

The map packs previously weren’t the very best, either. The Heroic maps were mostly mediocre. In the Legendary Map Pack, Avalanche is excellent, Blackout made fans very angry (but still plays pretty well), and Ghost Town is mediocre. In Mythic, Assembly is mediocre, Orbital is mediocre, and Sandbox is great for Forge. In Mythic II, Citadel is excellent, Heretic is great, and Longshore is mediocre.

Crimson in comparison: Wreckage is mediocre, Shatter is mediocre, and Harvest is pretty good. Really, they’re not that much worse than most of the Halo 3 DLC maps, though.

Maps being an event has little to do with their quality, in my opinion. 343 Industries likely doesn’t think “Well, these maps are garbage, so let’s announce and then release them within a week for a quick buck!”. For their part, I do think they put honest effort in. So please don’t turn this into a map quality thread.

That’s not what I mean. 343 Industries lets us know these maps are coming, but they don’t unveil them until about a week or less before their release. They don’t try to start the hype too long before the maps come. And they don’t try very hard to get fans clamoring for them.

Perhaps they are trying to fix the game via the Title Update and apparent game mechanical balances that they are much aware of.

I suppose they aren’t Bungie and they aren’t media hyping the Map Packs like the Halo 3 days. But if you look at it this way, all known DLC is being released in a 6 month time span, so that alone perhaps is already something to get all fans that enjoy new maps to be excited.

This is something new and unprecedented in the Halo franchise. If you take a look at their history. The closest map pack to be released from its respective launch date was the Heroic Map Pack with a 2 months and 16 days & the Noble Map Pack which was ironically also 2 months and 16 days. With the Crimson Map Pack released only a mere 1 month and 4 days later, I’m sure most everyone was busy breathing in the hype from the launch.

Dude, nobody liked waiting months for the maps. It’s much easier to just wait and show us at the last minute. Either way you’re really complaining about the way 343 delivers their news about DLC content? -_-

Seriously, I’ve now heard every minuscule ridiculous reason as to why Halo 3(IMO the worst original trilogy game) was better than Halo 4.

All i can say is that this map pack will be good! The last one blowed

Nobody’s complaining here, and frankly the “Well now I’ve heard people complain about everything” reply across every discussion thread with even the smallest negative intonation (even the constructive ones) is getting really old.

I really like Halo 4. I am not complaining - just reminiscing.

I explained myself when I cited the population of the playlist = nonsuccessive.

Do I need to post a blog about my argument to you OP? I rather not dedicate myself to arguments already won.

This thread you made is nostalgia. It’s also a fact all players lost when Bungie gave into selling all rights to the publisher, MS that bought out specific Bungie employees to form 343 for dedication to halo and offspring games.

Where are you going with this thread, pretty much a ramble and bickering?

I remember the days when I actually enjoyed playing Halo, and was eager to purchase additional maps for it.

Now im either extremely jaded, or Halo just sucks
