Alright, so halo 4 and halo 5 are kind of night and day when it comes to map designs. Halo 4(along with 3,2, ce, etc.) had the big wide open maps(with little to no sprint) that most of the series long term players are use too but this halo is completely different. Halo has really turned into a fast paced, CQB style game. 343 seems to be more interested in fast paced gameplay. Most maps do not have any kind of long sight lines.
Pretty much every map, everywhere you look there is cover. This encourages people to rush and actually rewards relentless rushing with the unlimited sprint and lower radar radius. Its not COD but it sure seems as if 343 is trying to tap into that fan base a little bit. This is part of the reason shotty snipe playlist didn’t really play the same way it used to (my subjective opinion of course) because there really isn’t enough space to really put distance between teams and be able to snipe. Also if you do happen to spot someone across the map there are extremely small windows to fit a shot in.(Which you could argue requires a lot of skill, i get that it does, but I dont feel like shotty snipes was ever run around with shotties in packs and attack players with no radar)
If Halo 5 is gonna be that game where it literally makes people who were hardcore ps2/3/4 users switch consoles, I think its gotta return to something completely different and innovative like it once was that shook the gaming community. An FPS with no sprint, limited weapons, and resources, almost entirely depending on resourcefulness, with a healthy skill gap.
Not sure if my “article” has a point but just felt like sharing.

Yeah, i just read the article they made on BTB. With all the spartan abilities I realllllly hope the maps are HUGE. Like the size of the warzone snow-map, something around that size would be perfect.

i’m not a fan of the current halo 5 maps at all, i love the classic maps where you can stop playing and look around and say wow this map looks beautiful
These maps are a huge improvement over h4. It’s meant to be competitive, not walking forever until you get to a battle. It’s also designed to weed out campers…best part of the design. You can camp, but only for 30 seconds or so before you’re found. This is great. If you want sight seeing, you can start a custom game and walk around and look all you want…not during a ranked game.
It’s supposed to be fast paced.
It’s supposed to be competitive.
It’s supposed to require at least some skill.
It’s halo.

Look I don’t wanna argue what “skill” is but it takes to be able to see your opponents at distance (while they see you) and be able to put them down from medium and long range. Nothing is wrong with fast paced game play. But I think the way the maps are not combined with the spartan abilities you take away certain play styles.
I like the play a little farther back and play support for my team. I do not camp, I just like to work in space and i’m confident in my shot in distance. This halo 5 is really all about (in my opinion) fast twitch muscles, and first shot.(Which also takes skill and is a play style that should be in the game) But when it seems to be purely Close quarters battling then you completely take away from game itself.
Again those elements are commonly found in call of duty, counter strike, battlefield, from what i’ve experienced in halo there should be a mix of hectic close combat and slower long range fighting. Thats all im saying. .

I don’t know, I kind of get the wow feeling when looking at the city skyline and lighting in Empire. Eden has a cool background too. You can’t really stop and look around when playing a match in Halo 5 because you will simply die very quickly.
Currently, and in my opinion, the majority of the maps are garbage. The only maps I do not mind are Truth and Eden/Empire? Some others are not so bad but I would love to never see or hear of the Rig, Regret, Plaza, or Orion ever again.
The problem is that the maps do no accommodate well to the gameplay. They are all cramped and have grenade trap corners everywhere. Sight lines are garbage and the gimped radar basically reduces the game by making the winner to who shot first.
This is for Arena only though. I will not touch Arena in this game ever again solo unless some changes are made. It was only bearable for me when playing as a party of 3 or 4.
Halo 2 & 3 also had very compact 4v4 maps, although they also had some 4v4s that weren’t all that small. Nothing in Halo 4 was small. That game did not know what a small map was. Guardians has small maps exclusively because if you want sight lines and more open spaces then warzone. Or eventually BTB. In the mean time you’re absolutely right that the current crop of maps are intended to promote very fast game play. Why shouldn’t they? Why should every Halo be exactly the same?
The main problem I have with map design isn’t so much the size as the layouts. I can’t seem to find a good “flow” for any map, ESPECIALLY the Rig. That map is just a cluster of objects that seem to serve no other purpose than to get in your way.
The maps I have enjoyed the most are Truth (since it’s a remake of a solid map) and Orion, mainly because that map feels like it has some breathing room, but still seems to have issues with map flow.
H4’s maps had to take into account that everyone had the ability to spawn with a ranged weapon, and so longer sightlines were par for the course. Have you ever looked at how deceptively large Haven is?
I’m not sure what the proper answers to any problems would be, but I’m guessing that 343 will have plenty of data after looking at a few weeks of metrics to determine how the game is being played by noobs, pros and casuals alike to determine how best to forge their maps from now on.
Idea - Do you think that maybe having INFINITE sprint is the problem? Not just sprint by itself, but the ability to use it without stopping.

I think if ur going to continue an allstar game series you need both styles. In games in general you do not change what is working, you fix what isnt. I think halo 4 was a bit on the big side but to completeky shrink the maps and make them small enough to get across in 6 seconds flat, i think thats too much. Also competitve is subjective. A long range fight is as competitive as a fast paced close quarters fight.
uh, on a fair few of the maps there are some pretty decent sniper sightlines if you set up right (Pegasus comes to mind. Coliseum is quite nice too, top snipe can hit so much of the map, and the bridges provide decent oversight while letting you pull a quick getaway) I feel the games lack of large, open maps is because there was no BTB maps on launch; most of the maps are designed for close, tight 4v4 action (ie: Truth). This is the problem with launching a game with only half its final features.
Also, I’d argue that Rig is a pretty good map; There are a tonne of paths to take, a few hidden little tricks that most people haven’t clicked on yet etc. It makes good usage of Halo 5’s increased vertical mobility

I like eden, pegasus, colliseum, orion, and the subway/sewer looking map. Im starting to figure out the rig so that one is growing on me. I feel like unlimited sprint and shortend radar would be great additions to halo 4 size maps but these maps so far, its just too much in my opinion. Combine that with a really powerful AR and its run n gun central.

Motion tracker is too short imo; the increased speed makes it laughably ineffective
