Deathgrip is a Big Team Battle map reminiscent of Halo classics Avalanche and Waterworks. Combatants wage war in an expansive battlefield bisected by a giant metal claw - long forgotten by the Forerunner after the construction of Halo. Vehicular carnage is abundant in the shallow waters beneath the claw, while intense hand to hand combat reigns supreme in the narrow mountain pass between the opposing bases. Players may take advantage of the elevated position of the claw to dominate and control the battlefield; control the claw - control the game.

“The claw is your master. He chooses who will go and who will stay.”

Deathgrip is a completely revamped version of my Forgetacular submission “Clawdaddy”. I gutted the map, rethought the layout, and pretty much started from scratch. The only thing that really stayed was the claw, and even that has changed quite significantly. I have tried to be as conservative as possible with my budget this time, and have attempted to let Forgeworld’s natural landscape do most of the work for me. As a result the battlefield is able to be humongous without sacrificing performance.

I designed the map in a U shape with a narrow passage through the center between the two bases, as was the general layout in Halo 3’s Avalanche. I wanted to create a huge map in which both ground fighting and vehicle fighting could occur simultaneously. I’ve found that on many BTB maps in Reach the vehicles tend to dominate the battle to the point where players on the ground no longer stand a fighting chance.

I have attempted to remedy this by in a sense segregating close quarters and heavy vehicle combat. Hand to hand combat takes place in the mountain, bases, and coastal rocks, while vehicle fighting takes place out in the open. I have also tried to encourage player mobility around the map, through specific weapon/vehicle placement and by including both man cannons and teleportors.

Bases are equipped with power weapons and vehicles, such as the Sniper Rifle, Grenade Launcher, and a Wraith. Two-way teleportors located inside the respective bases transport players to watchtowers on the Coastline of the map; there they will find more power weapons including a rocket launcher, a Ghost, and a Falcon. A lone Plasma Launcher spawns beneath the claw. A shotgun is located on the claw’s control booth in the mountain pass between the bases, another Avalanche inspired idea.

I have omitted Banshees, Revanents, and Scorpions as I feel each is a over powered in its own special way.
