So with the news of a new Warzone boss, the Grunt Goblin, and the addition of the Wasp, which looks awesome, I am starting to think Halo 5 has hit its stride with multiplayer.
There is just one glaring issue that I know of now. The Mantis has been the subject of huge flame wars since Halo 4 introduced it to the series. And calls for it to be balanced have been ringing since the first time it was splattered by a Ghost. Now I will bring the topic back up by suggesting boarding be impossible from the front.
I’m not going to call for its weapons or stomp to be buffed. Just make front boarding impossible and it will be perfectly balanced. Still easily disabled and fairly squishy, but capable of defending itself if the pilot stays back and knows what they are doing. I know it likely isn’t that simple, but it seems like a fair consideration at least.

The only thing the mantis needs it a larger area of effect for the stomp.
More effective stomp + Boarding only from behind = Ideal Mantis
Improve the stomps radius and dmg so its viable and make it so you can’t board from the front.
Ideally they would also buff the chaingun’s accuracy and make it so you can fire single rockets a la halo 4, but this would warrant making it a higher REQ cost in warzone imo.

My problem with this is that a Mantis can then back itself into a corner, or most of a corner and strafe to and fro and not get boarded.

Right the area of effect on the stomp is the problem. Even a perfectly timed one isn’t guaranteed to keep you from getting boarded. Fix the stomp, fix the mantis.

I don’t use the mantis often, but I’ve heard its garbage when it comes to the stomp. The most I’ve ever seen or played them, they’re always just backing up, which in my mind would make them incredibly hard to kill if you couldn’t board from the front.
This should be more of a request than a suggestion, and here’s what they should’ve added in at launch:
- Fire single faster missiles with increased AOE (can still fire multiple missiles if held triggered long enough) - Increased AOE of stomp attack significantly. - Increased chaingun damage or accuracy. - Boardable only from behind.Basically the mantis from halo 4 multiplayer.
I have never successfully stomped someone. Every time i have tried i get boarded. I dont mind the boarding from the front since normally i just keep backing up and get them with the chain gun. What drives me more crazy when its someone invisible even tho this is exactly how i finished my commendation. Like comedyshermit said i think improving stomp is all that is needed. Being board able from behind would make the mantis way too hard to board. luckily they cant take very many hits anyway. Still haven’t used the Hannibal think ill try it out tomorrow. Test the oni out other day and it definitely was pretty good but still pretty easy to get boarded.
The new TitanFall 2 has some really cool mechanics for boarding enemy mechs. Basically there’s 3 stages I believe.
- You board the enemy Titan and rip a battery or fusion cell from somewhere out of it’s head, drains it’s shields and you pocket the battery (you can then jump on a friendly titan and it will give it a temporary overshield, how cool is that?)
- The titan then becomes vulnerable to tier 2 boarding. You board the enemy titan and rip up it’s stuff, opening a hole and possibly damaging it.
- The titan then becomes vulnerable to tier 3 boarding. You board the enemy Titan and dump a grenade in the hole. BOOM!
Point is you can’t just shrek them like the mantis.
