Lets be honest, halo is not the popular beast it once was, looking at steam numbers its pretty much evident that halo doesn’t capture audiences for a long time.
Opening up the halo matchmaking side i.e halos warzone to free to play will, in my opinion, hold larger audiences for longer. Looking at mw warzone it has been played like 50million players and it doesn’t look like its dying anytime soon.
The campaign, multiplayer forge and custom games can be put behind the $60 price tag.
My opinion for an ideal setup that I think would drive a huge player base.
Free Content for all
- Warzone
- Warzone Firefight
- Forge
- Campaign mission #1
- Being player 2 in campaign coop, if hosting player owns the game.
Paid Content package
- Full campaign
- Arena multiplayer (social and ranked)
- Custom games
- Traditional firefight (i.e. ODST/Reach firefight)
With all the practice 343 has had with segmenting the game files, I think this is totally doable, and would provide enough free content/ “paid content preview” to drive a good player population for a long time.
Warzone should not return and would not attract anyone to the franchise. If anything were to be free to play, it should be custom games with a multiplayer playlist limited to a few core game modes and maps for a limited time here and there so that it can encourage new players to give the franchise a try.
Don’t bet on Warzone being the best attraction. Wasn’t a bad concept in Halo 5 but it gets old really fast. Warzone Firefight was a good inclusion but I have mixed feelings about it being a good idea of being free-to-play, it might work though since Warzone had a good first impression.
Warzone was pretty much the only attaction in halo 5 other than customs for casuals. Pop count was way higher than arena and social

This is wholly dependent on what Infinite has to offer.
I’d maybe inclined to give the F2P section a few 4v4 and BTB social playlists, but Forge should definitely be with the main game.

H5 Forge has been F2P on PC for 2 years now (maybe longer). Having forge be F2P lets 343 bump their map count at no cost other than hosting servers that are already being paid for anyway.
I disagree about offering any Arena s F2P. This is definitely subjective opinion though.

You have an odd opinion considering warzone and warzone firefight had the highest player populations for virtually the entire life span of Halo 5 (including now).
343 pulled off a great Arena mode for those of us who want arena game play, and also offered a mode that had a huge casual player base. That mode and casual player base also funded the entirety of Halo esports.
I don’t quite understand how abandoning that mode and what it provided could be good for the franchise. The only negative I can think of from Warzone’s inclusion in H5 was that BTB only got forge maps. I’d be surprised if 343 repeats that mistake with how much fan and media flak they’ve been given over it.

Well, according to this Link the top 5 modes at the end of 2018 (That’s the last update we got on playlist popularity in Halo 5 to my knowledge) the only warzone mode was warzone firefight in at number 5. Now I know a lot can change in a year and a bit but, I think you’re massively underestimating social and ranked play. I’m going to contact Josh and see if we can get an updated playlist popularity list.
As far as making war zone free to play, I wouldn’t even bet that it would be in infinite. If it were me I know I would scrap Warzone completely and focus a lot more on modes that you know are popular like Slayer, doubles, BTB, fiesta and after that, I would really focus on firefight. Firefight could be absolutely massive. There’s more and more evidence out there that says more people like playing with their friends against the computer and not other players. Other than the core modes that we all know are popular in Halo I would put a lot of resources into firefight.
I’m just going to copy/paste what I’ve posted last night into a similar thread
(geez, this topic is getting out of hand lol)
It has been already confirmed that H:I won’t be split into Campaign+rest and multiplayer,
alle the stuff about which has been around in the forum since a few days are just rumors without any
official sources backing them or indicating something alike.
Besides that, I’d rather want a classic experience,
since I am not a friend neither of F2P games in general and battle royal for example in particular.

That’s a fair point, I had completely forgotten that 5’s Forge was free on PC.
I been said this. I get the feel 343 is going to make warzone bigger and better and make it free.
Warzone free for all 32+ players
Warzone 12 v 12
Other modes you have to buy the game to play

Honest BTB forge maps were done really well and look as good as a non forge map. Viking looks as good as Valhalla did in Halo 3 and 4. So do the forged sandtrap and others

I actually agree. Halo 5’s forge let people generate some crazy detailed maps. The biggest quality difference I think you see in the forge only maps its the lighting against and from the forge objects. Ray tracing might change that on Series X though in Infinite, which could be pretty cool.
I still think Reach’s approach was best though, with a mix of full dev’d BTB maps with forge maps as supplements.

I would add spartan customizations to the Paid Content package. and please keep those as achievement based. I’m sure there will be different paid DLC or whatever to expand missions or whatever.

I was advocating for something like this for Halo 5some time ago.
