Make us care when a character dies!

Reach, halo 3 and Halo Wars spoilers in this thread! Also a few other games. I’ll put a few spoiler thingys up, so don’t worry your pretty little head!

I say this because throughout the Reach campaign, I felt pretty much nothing when everyone died. Well, i’m not totally heartless, I was a little upset when Jorge died. But that’s it.

Jorge: Aww no!

Kat: What just happened!? However, I notice I don’t have whiplash no more…

Carter: Bu-bu-bu-but I’ve killed like 30 Scarabs! And I’m alive!

Emile: Cool, but WHY U NO LOOK AT RADAR!?

Jun: Well, I don’t know where he is…

Six: Like a boss…

Now for Halo 4, or some other Halo in the future, I want to feel something when somebody close to Chief dies. If Cortana goes, then maybe…

Here’s a few examples of good video game deaths (In my opinion)

One: MW3 (Wait! Don’t crucify me yet!)

When Soap dies, I was like ‘Soap! No!’ I think I feel more connected to Soap then say Kat because well, first, I’m sure he can drive…But seriously, he feels more human and down to earth for a normal (ish) person like me because he isn’t a half tonne super soldier with a robotic arm. A good in game death, I say.

Two: Gears of War 3

When Dom dies, -Yoink!- it that was the one of the best-done things I’ve EVER watched. Ever!

I’m not going to lie, a wee tear came out then. So heart-wrenching! Why!? WHYYY!?!? Best death scene I’ve ever seen in any game, film, book whatever.

I’ll update this thread soon.

We’re not retreating, we’re advancing in the opposite direction!

I just hope Master Chief doesn’t die.

You also have to point out that Dom and Soap were in 3 games so you got this attachment to them because they had longer to explain their back story. No way on Earth could Bungie make us feel bad for characters we never got to know. Especially Kat

Ah yes. I missed this.

Modern Warfare already ruined itself in that department by letting Price die right in front of you at the end of MW and then he’s miraculously alive during MW2.

And you guys want to talk “Canon muck ups?”

Gears of War would’ve been great if they actually elaborated on the Locust they were oddly building up a reveal for only to just say “Nope. They been there forever, we made a deal and it went bad.” Much as I love the ride, the final “reveal” was pretty lacking. The only thing it had was a solid ending at least. Though, I’m sure they’ll ruin that with some new sequel trilogy.

Most of the Spartan III’s are “kept secret” anyway so not getting full back story never bothered me. If anything, they could’ve elaborated a tad more on who Noble Six was. If it weren’t for the books, John would be nothing but a bland “John Wayne-Man of Few Words” type in power armor. If Fall of Reach alone didn’t flesh him out as it did, then the faceless character ploy stands ever more true. I can’t put a face to someone who’s more or less just an HD shell of all my favorite action stars of the 80’s. Say a snappy line, blow some crap up. If Chief is as awesome, he’s the bottom rung of unoriginal. Which is fine but I like a character with depth. Without the books, John is about as deep as a puddle of piss.

Spartans never die…

> > I just hope Master Chief doesn’t die.

> Spartans never die…

I actually never felt comfortable with this kind of title even if it was for morale. It was false propaganda in the end.

And even with the Spartan II’s, the III program proved just how easy it is for ONI to throw money at a program that’s sole purpose in total, is suicide/expandability.

The title shouldn’t be “Spartans never die” when the true nature is “Spartans are sent to death”.

Contradicting, no?

I believe that the deaths in Reach failed for the sole reason that we hadn’t had time to get attached to the characters. It’s really hard for a developer to develop a character enough in only one game that the player will actually care. Aside from the deaths in Reach, neither did I care about Miranda’s death that much. Johnson on the other hand, his death was not only well executed (we actually got to see him while he was dying), but the character had become so beloved that it really felt bad to lose him. He was one of the very few fictional characters whose death has actually mattered to me.

I believe that in order to have any succesful death scenes, 343i needs to develop characters throughout the entire trilogy and kill them in the final game. Making a character and killing them off in the first game is pointless. Besides, they need to actually care what characters the players care about. Let’s take Johnson for example, he was just one of the sergeant models used for Halo CE, still players liked him a lot. Bungie developed the character a bit further and players truly cared about him. The point is that taking an arbitrary character and deciding “this will be the character players will love” doesn’t work. Sure, character development plays part, but you can never guess who are going to be the most liked characters.

That’s why I say we should let them develop the characters and see who are succesful and who aren’t. After all, we’re not blood thirsty, are we? W don’t need to see deaths we’re supposed to care about in the first case. Especially when chances we would care about them will be minimal.

I almost teared up when Johnson died, and i actually stood up and preformed a salute to the T.V. at the end of Halo 3 because i thought Chief died. Here we are, chief i the luckiest spartan ever.

even though ‘i new it from the beginning’, I was NOT pleased w/the the killing off of my squad and inevitably myself during Reach.

Well for characters to die, we probrobly wont be seeing that till later on in the trilogy…I mean, this is the fresh new start. Might as well see which kinds of characters we will meet up with first.

I’m going to say that I was so close to crying when dom died. I put that on my life no joke.

WHEN SGT. JOHNSON DIED I CRIED LIKE A BABY!

What? lol I thought Soap and Dom’s deaths were some of the worst I have seen, but then again COD and Gears have pretty bad stories, and character development. Reach’s were terrible as well, although Noble 6 had a good one. Mass Effect 3 killed off their characters pretty well. I won’t name names but in my game I believe 2 people went down and they were very well done deaths, they were emotional, heroic, and kind of badass. I liked Johnson’s death too. MGS4 also had great ones. Other then that I can’t think of any other notable game deaths.

It was kind of the opposite for me. Halo is the main game in my heart out of every game I’ve ever played. Reach’s campaign made me pretty sad towards the end when people started dying left and right, especially Kat’s.

Well Soap was pretty cool, I must admit. But the death of Dom was one of the most sadest moments I have ever seen.

The Noble team deaths were…meh.
