make the marines more unique

One of the things i wish 343 would try and do is make the marines more unique. I do realize that in their current state they are worse than grunts, but that’s a different subject that needs to be resolved.

I just wish though that the marines would seem like more than just throw away characters, come up with more variants, different faces, gear. 4 was terrible with this they didn’t even have female marines, I think it was just the same maybe 2 variants the entire game. plus give some of them extra personality, make some of them as unique as johnson was in the first halo.

Not quite only two variants OP, but yes, more variation would be nice.

> Not quite only two variants OP, but yes, more variation would be nice.

Only “Infantry 2” and “Infantry 3” are seen on a regular basis.

“Infantry 4” and “Communications” are much more rare, typically seen only in the Infinity’s Hangar before you get in the pelican, as well as sometimes spawning on the Mammoth, but not often.

I have yet to see a “Medic” model, and the only time i’ve heard of the “Field Seargent” model being used was for the Sergeant Johnson “Easter Egg”

so yes, you could technically say that only 2 variants are really “used” throughout the campaign

> so yes, you could technically say that only 2 variants are really “used” throughout the campaign

Not really. Unless “used” in this context means something other than what the word actually means.

The marines stood out in the previous Halo games, usually because of their personalities and reactions during combat. In Halo 4 I can’t think of a single line ever said by any marine ever. I can’t even remember if they cheer when jumping in a Warthog.

The Marines in Halo 5 need for be a little bit more playful. Part of the reason I loved Halo CE’s Marines was because they all had personalities that made them fun to fight alongside with.

Some more variation on the Marines would be a nice touch.

That’s -Yoink-, the marines were a single useless entity that existed to hold onto weapons for me. The only personality they ever had was wooping over jumps or telling us that tank beats everything. Whilst these were funny lines, they was really only the odd one that’s worth mentioning. And on the jump noises in H4 - tbh I can’t even remember if then do it in 2, 3 or Reach - I only remember them doing it in CE.

Either way, I care so very little about the marines in Halo. They could all have the same model and i still wouldn’t care…all they are good for is elite bait.

which is why they should be more useful in combat, but as i said that’s a different topic entirely

Making them more useful means they’ll do all the work for you. For example, in Halo 1 the marines had several different behavior programs. They typically had the program with short line of sight and burst fired all weapons. Some marines, like Johnson or all marines within the Covenant carrier you rescue with Keyes, are all programmed differently with infinite line of sight, and would full auto-fire all weapons. That’s why that escort mission is rather easy.

One thing I hated about marines (specifically in CE) is the “Hey, you stole my kill!”

I mean, seriously, I just saved you from a hunter. Stop whining.

Both Reach and 4 had marines that were waaay too serious, and I really kind of missed the old marine humour. I’ll be honest and say I don’t see it returning in Guardians…

Marines in halo 5 need to return to being more vocal. I can’t really remember any stand-out lines from marines in Halo 4 beyond “He’s alive!”. In previous games it seemed like they had more to say.

> Making them more useful means they’ll do all the work for you.

If you program them correctly, they won’t do all the work for you, just some of it. You could perhaps, program them not to advance if the player is just camping away, trying to let the AI do all the work. You could make them more likely to retreat if the Player is not assisting them.

And you have to remember, the Covenant/Promethians are more powerful than Marines on most difficulties (easy being the obvious exception).

Also, they are trained soldiers, and the only reason they’re on the level at all is to assist the player. If they did nothing to help the player other than provide cannon fodder, they are a complete waste of programming and time.

Play Half-life 2, the friendly AI is extremely useful and can even heal you, but it is by no means overpowered.

People also complained about them getting in the way constantly and not really being that much help in a fight. Being healed wasn’t that much of a benefit considering they did a great job in setting out health and energy packs, also storing them in secret areas for players who explore.

If you have them survive long enough to get the AR’s than they become very useful. plus you did have proper squad commands to tell them where to go so you didn’t get stuck in a hallway with them.
