Can someone explain to me why the forums don’t automatically close topics that are inactive? I keep seeing “Please don’t revive old topics” being posted, when it seems as if the easier solution is to have topics automatically close after a certain period of time of inactivity. I know this isn’t in the moderator’s power, but it doesn’t seem as if it would be difficult for the programmers to implement.
… but then what would us monitors do all day?

That’s what I thought.
Is this actually the reason, though?

The way I understand it some threads will remain relevant after long amounts of time. From what I can tell this mostly happens with threads in the Halo Universe section, but can also happen from time to time with other sections. Basically there are too many exceptions for it to be worth it.
I suggested a potential solution for that in this thread. Basically, a notification will pop up after you hit the submit button letting you know it’s an old thread and bumping it could be against the rules.

Or is it?

That is part of it; there is a bit of a judgement call; some threads provide extremely good information, required a lot of effort, are to obscure a topic for multiple threads, or the new replies have a lot of effort put into them and those stay open. The majority of threads don’t need to be revived; the forum doesn’t benefit from it, but for now at least it takes a human to look at and judge whether it’s worth bending the rules for or if it needs locked.
