Some of my best memories playing bungie’s halos were fighting side by side badass space marines (and elites, grunts and hunters in halo 2), admiring their funny dialogue and their cool armour literally reseting to the last checkpoint, or even restarting the machine if my favourite died.
The mission silent cartographer on halo CE is one of my favourite levels, mostly because of the storming of the beach, other mentions go to the missions, Halo,Truth and reconciliation, Outskirts, Mertopolis, all arbiter missions, the ark and the covenant.
When first playing for the arbiter i recall just how awesome it was to fight alongside soldiers who i once knew as enemies, and when you fought side by side with the hunters, that goes down as one of my favourite moments in video game franchise.
Re-doing the marines armour and dialogue. (both have turned disgusting imo, and don’t get me started on the nerf armour) and taking away the squad system, (for me and many others a chief going back to his lone wolf routes just fighting with marines and ODSTs and a lone wolf Locke would suit the campaign MUCH MUCH better) and adding more marines into missions, as there were hardly ANY in halo 5, and a few in Halo 4, yet their overall design sort of ruined it, would help give the AI companions whether marine, ODST or alien (flood elite for example) would make the Halo 6 campaign SOOO much more enjoyable, and would be a step closer (though small) in bringing halo back to where it belongs… THE TOP
Shouldn’t have typed just one big paragraph, makes readers not wanna read. As for the Marines, they should be more lethal. Make me shake in my boots when I hear one
Just make them look better and stronger.

Edited version of the OP.
Just get rid of the nerf armour, give them proper military gear and make them good again
Same here. I remember playing threw the ark and being able to bring an ODST threw the entire mission all the way to the end with the pelican extraction via mongoose. I was pretty disappointed with there being no marines at all in halo 5 and hope they get rid of the motor cross helmets for future games.
completely agree. One of the things i hated about halo 4 and 5 is the lack of marine allies. Halo 5 had some corporate PMC’s fight alongside you but that was only really one one-two missions [with them only following you throughout in one]
It would seem 343i is already trying to fix this with HW2’s art style.
I didn’t mind not having the marines with me in the campaign. Sure it would be cool to have one or two big battle scenes in the campaign, I wouldn’t mind not having them.
I think H3 marines were perfect. Their look was my favourite balance between armour and fabric. Also really miss their go lucky hoorah attitudes. The first time I really payed attention to H5 marines I was… disappointed. Where did the green armour and camo go and why are they wearing such bright rainbow colours
I miss Chips. Anyone know what happened to him canonically?
So true man. I loved the Marines in the older halos. I’m the OP of the Ode to Sergeant Johnson thread, so you can already see how I feel about the marines.
I was playing halo 3 with a buddy, and we each were in the gunner seat of a chopper and a marine driving us. He had freaking awesome lady marine who drove like heck. Mine wasn’t as good but he was decent. Anyway, we’re driving smoking enemies left and right, when a few explosions kill our marines. He and I shed a couple tears. At least in our hearts. Never had I met such great drivers.
One more thing, I also loved how the Marines always knew what they were doing. It wasn’t them following me, It was ME following them!
I’m fine with their current designs. As for the sentiment that they don’t look military… take a look at the USMC’s Modular Tactical Vest. Hell, there’s even the older Interceptor body armor.
The issues I do have are the colors they’ve chosen for their equipment and their lines. The simulated Marines in WZ aren’t really an issue to me, considering that they are color-coded to a team, but the standard Marines in Halo 4 typically had this weird sandy color with a sort-of, not-quite brown with some green.
The voices and lines they have are my primary issue with them. They lack the personality of the Bungie-era Marines, who had different voices and a ton of lines. Halo 4 and Halo 5? Only seems to be one voice for them all, and their lines are incredibly limited.

Quote from Halopedia:
“Similar to the character of Sergeant Stacker, while Dubbo does make an appearance throughout the trilogy, his canonical status remains in limbo; as he is never mentioned in any of the novels nor does any canonical source explain his fate.”

Well… -Yoink-. In my head cannon at least, he’s still alive and well.
See, lines like this are why we need marines back in Halo!
Chips Dubbo: “Whoa…it’s like a postcard! Dear Sarge: kicking -Yoink- in outer space, wish you were here.”
Avery J. Johnson: “I heard that…-Yoink!-!”
