Make Halo Great Again

I promise this has nothing to do with politics :’) .

I want to talk about what’s going on with the Halo, especially with H5, and open up a productive discussion so if you got in here to troll or insult just go away.

Since 343 has taken Halo we’ve seen a big decrease of sells (especially with H5), a big decrease of active Community members, the biggest Esports organization dropping the game (talking about MLG) and a whole lot of negative stuff that happened to the franchise.
I’m not blaming 343 for this, it’s just a fact.
We went through all this with H4 and the MCC (which by the way were really fun to play).
We hoped for a better Halo with the fifth chapter, somebody also told me that it was going to be a masterpiece.
That didn’t happen.

I think the most objective way to judge a game is on how much it makes you want to go back playing it once you just finished your last game (maybe it’s just me but anyway tell me if you disagree with this).
This according to me is the biggest problem with Halo 5. At the beginning it was all good, new stuff, new maps, new game modes, WARZONE (even if i don’t play it that much i have to admit that it’s a good gametype), and it was fun.
There were good social playlists and also good ranked ones.
The problem is that from that point on, despite all the updates, patches and stuff, the game made no progress at all.

When i play Ranked Arena i just play the same maps and game types over and over and over again, so ok, i move to Social Arena, start a game and half of my team is AFK, game types are not as good as the ranked ones (with all due respect i don’t really like playing infection or super fiesta all day long) and there’s no social 4v4 slayer/objective playlist (which they decided to remove because it was taking all the players from Ranked Arena), so i move to Warzone and what do i find? Basically a strongholds game on a huge map, except that you don’t only have to face other spartan but also AI (which btw is not that intelligent…).

At the beginning i thought that always playing the same maps was the problem but then i found out that the real one is game types.
Back in H3/HR/H4 we had a ton of different game types.
For CTF game types there were Classic CTF, Multi Flag, Neutral Flag and others i don’t remember, there were SWAT variants as well like Potato or Territories, there was KOTH (Team or FFA), Oddball, Multi Team (which also included KOTH), Regicide, Ricochet, Extraction and then there were a hundred variants of Slayer (Elite, Slayer Pro, Slayer BRs/DMRs etc…).
Where did all those modes go?
Why do we have to beg 343 for Oddball?

Always playing the same modes on the same maps is boring and utterly frustrating, this is why H5 is now a dead game and it takes me 30 minutes to find a game in any playlist (mostly ranked but social and warzone too) on EXTENDED research.

I only talked about the multiplayer cause it’s not even worth talking about the campaign. I’ll just say that in previous Halo games i would go back and play the campaign a thousand times but H5’s one is just boring, like the rest of the game.

Also, i don’t want to mention the latest update as well as weapon balance in general cause everybody has different opinions about it and i don’t want to create another “weapon balance discussion” thread.

Thanks to anyone who spent his time reading this, let me know your thoughts.

Dat reference thou…
lol.
I want to say my opinion is pretty much aligned with yours.
The return of oddball is a good sign… even if we had to beg for it.
That means 343 is listening to an extent. And hopefully they take a lesson and keep in mind we miss the good variety of game types we used to play.

I see where 343 was trying to go for. A more limited selection of maps and game types/playlists would keep the population in each playlist higher and therefor increase the speed at which you would find a game. But still, they need to figure out how to incorporate the game types and map varieties we love in that… and hopefully in a more timely manner in the future.

if 343 has been listening then why take 2 years to add it in? why is KOTH still not in the game as a competitive game mode (only in action sack)

Because they had other priorities that involved adding things in that the community requested.

Just do what i did, i took a long break from halo 5. But unfortunately i come back and the they changed the weapons so i suck at halo 5 now. Whenever I’m bored of halo 5 i just play halo 4 or reach. So if you’re bored of it then just do that.

All I know is that this latest update made Halo 5 not great.

thats not a good excuse for them, H5 is there pride and joy right now, they abandoned the MCC the day they released H5. if their priorities was to add in more that the community is requesting then why does it take 2 years to do so? why do they have to add it in and completely change the game while they do so? your argument in defense of them isnt a very strong one. I would love to be able to stand behind them but how many times do we have to get frustrated at the things they do? i understand that they are making H6 right now. but that doesnt give them the right to abandoned one of there games and take for ever on an other. either they really are committed to the community of halo players or they are not. and their track record is a pretty glaring sign that they not.

Yeah. 343 has really only been listening to the “competitive” players and almost entirely ignoring the “casual” players, y’know the players that used to make up most of Halos community, well until they got fed up with 343 and left that is. But the problem is 343 didn’t listen to the WHOLE community, just a small fraction of it.

So they added 2 high profile social playlists in the past few months because they dont listen to casual players?

“i understand that they are making H6 right now. but that doesnt give them the right to abandoned one of there games and take for ever on an other.” Oh it does indeed. There is no obligation to keep support on a game post launch, they’ve already proven this. Furthermore halo 5 has been out two years, most of its player base has played their hearts out already so all focus goes to halo 6. It’s pointless putting more resources into something that’s lost 80% of its playerbase, it’s an aging game. Furthermore that keeps 343 away from making the newer games where that playerbase will be back in more numbers. They could add anything new to H5 and I still won’t touch it, it’s time has long passed. At this point it’d only be a service to those still playing. Furthermore I’d really agree with ARC, 343 has their priorities and unless you’ve got the numbers showing otherwise, then you don’t know what should and shouldn’t be implemented first. This is where personal feelings need moved out of the way and you dig up numbers to validate an argument vs their priority. People want playable elites, how much want it though? Why has 343 not done it? This is where you should look into 1.how many even used them pre-H4, how many want them now, and how does it stack up vs other community wants/needs.

Infection? The in depth forge used to also implement community maps into matchmaking? The bloated up warzone? Even campaign additions? Firefight? The implementation of custom matchmaking? Do indulge me on how the competitive players are 343s primary focus as I don’t see it that way, even others won’t see it that way. The game plays better than the last few titles on a competitive level, but it still isn’t good enough for me. You’ll find me agreeing they can listen better, but I’m not going to scapegoat people who play at a more serious level than others. Furthermore competitive players can play and enjoy the very same things as you.

“well until they got fed up with 343 and left that is” does this apply to Reach and H4 as well? Two games that were far more casual than competitive compared to H5. Do I blame casuals for this?

“they abandoned the MCC the day they released H5.” Then why are they giving it an update 3.5 years after launch? I know their priority has been on Halo 5 due to the amount of bugs it had, but let’s not exaggerate here.

”if their priorities was to add in more that the community is requesting then why does it take 2 years to do so?” Like I said, because they were working on other things like the Warzone Firefight, Grenade Launcher, Customs Browser, and everything else in the updates. They already had oddball in the game a few months into launch, but they never got around to adding the skull in until now.

“why do they have to add it in and completely change the game while they do so?” So it works with Halo 5. Can’t you see that many of these gametypes cannot work with Halo 5’s mechanics and sandbox? Plus, it provides a reason to play this iteration. Think of it like CoD trying to copy Titanfall’s mechanics. It works for Titanfall, but because CoD is different, the mechanics don’t work.

“your argument in defense of them isnt a very strong one.” It was one sentence after all. That’s what I’m doing now: providing a strong argument by breaking down each sentence.

“i understand that they are making H6 right now. but that doesnt give them the right to abandoned one of there games and take for ever on an other. either they really are committed to the community of halo players or they are not.” How many devs do you know that have to juggle between 4 games (MCC, H5, HW2, H6)? I can’t think of anyone besides 343. How many games get updated 2+ years after launch? Not many. Try looking at the situation from their viewpoint of 343 rather than as a community member. They don’t sit on their -Yoinks!- all day twiddling their thumbs.

“and their track record is a pretty glaring sign that they not.” Halo 5 and the updates that proceeded are straight from community feedback. Try looking through an objective lens and you’ll see how much they actually listen.

You know it’s easier to have a discussion when you quote me rather than living in an echo chamber. If it was October 27, 2015, I’d agree with you. However, 2 years after launch, there are double amount of social playlists than competitive ones. You know the problem with listening to the whole community? The amount of differing opinions. They need to find what the majority wants. After Reach and 4, the majority was saying it needed to be more competitive, so 343 listened.

Yes. This game caters to competitive players, you know where the REAL casual players are left out? Custom games. There’s so many GOOD features missing from custom games, like remember in literally every other Halo aside from CE where you could randomize weapons in infection? Gone. Remember when you had a life counter ranging from 1-10? Gone. Remember when you had game types that weren’t just a poor imitation of slayer? Gone.

The problem is the MAJORITY didn’t want competitve, they just wanted competitive modes, not a competitive game. There needs to be a MIDDLE GROUND, something 343 and their followers don’t quite seem to understand. It’s fine to have casual AND competitive, but you gotta balanced 'em out so they work together.

But the problem is 343 didn’t listen to the WHOLE community, just a small fraction of it.

Gone.

Im a pretty casual player, just take a quick look at my company. I still have a very fun time playing this game.

There are many different kinds of causal player. Halo 5 has proven time and time again to ignore casual players.

Sounds like a general 343 problem; not a “oh, we’re only catering to competitive people” problem. You also seem to be forgetting that competitive players also like casual gametypes. Everyone including competitive people suffer from lack of options in custom games.

So there are a few options missing. You know what tips the scale in the other direction? All the other stuff they added into custom games.

halo is amazing
