I love the idea of an open world/semi-open world Halo game and all the possibilities it brings. The exploration, collectibles, new experiences and all that I think will be awesome to experience.
I haven’t seen any mention of it, but I’m curious on how the mainline story missions will play out. Will they also be in the open world style where you kind of just ‘happen’ upon them and then are given objectives to clear out and area or a waypoint to a POI to explore? Or will it be something maybe more like Gears 5 or something where the mainline missions are their own ‘instance’ and you go to a checkpoint to trigger them and then they load up independently of the open world aspect if that makes sense.
My concern is Halo Infinite losing some of the level magic by going open world. I like the story/narrative that is contained within these linear story missions and would hate to see that lose some of its magic or become diluted by a ‘Take out 3 Banished AA guns’ type of mission where The Weapon and Pilot are just spouting off one liners the whole time.
I’m basically hoping for the best of both worlds. An open world to explore and play around in. Give me side missions and stuff to play around with. And then a strong narrative that is driven and really pulls you in and I’m not sure if that is doable by having the mainline missions just ‘existing’ in the world at any given time.
What’re your guys thoughts? What do you think it’ll be?
I wouldn’t be surprised if certain missions and objectives were the “main story” and unlock progressively as you complete the appropriate story moment. Everything else would be secondary. You can clear out as many strongholds and rescue as many Marines as you want, but until you complete, say, Story Mission A, you won’t unlock Story Mission B.

But do you think Story Mission A will be some location within the open world? Or do you think it’ll be like a checkpoint you trigger that loads you into its own mission. I’m thinking kind of like ODST where it was open to explore, but you found the various POIs that put you into their own missions.

I’d assume it’d be like ODST. Granted, in that game’s case it didn’t really impact the story much based on the order you found out what happened with the rest of your squad.

It will prob function similar to that of the division. Technically the story mission is in the open world but when you get to the start you are basically in its own instance for said mission. Everything becomes hand scrypted for said mission and when your done you go back into the world. Of course how expansive those will be? No idea.
I think the way Gears 5 did their campaign is probably relatively close to how Halo Infinite’s campaign will play out with some Far Cry inspiration thrown in for good measure. Some story missions will probably take you through some of the larger outside open world sections. I think the way it will mostly go is you have to go to a certain area on the map to progress the story but you can mess around and tackle outposts or search for collectibles while you go from one point to the next.

thats def a better theory. I mean, we know the coalition did help with infinite so its entirely possible they gave design ideas and learnings. Gears 5 areas only really didnt work cause outside specific spots, there was literally nothing

I do want to point out that ODST’s open world was designed so the closest mission to you was always the “next” one chronologically. Playing the missions out of order wasn’t an option until after you beat Uplift Reserve, which at that point, Rookie is positioned in the most southern part of the map and each mission is gradually more north of the last. You really have to go out of your way to play them out of order. Now, you can load up “Open City” which spawns you at the drop pod with all six missions available to play in any order, but I highly doubt H:I will be like this.
I feel a lot of people are misunderstanding the purpose of these objectives that are most likely secondary to a certain degree. In past Halo games you use to search the map in it’s entirety and find everything you could. This includes getting outside of the map as far as you can to finding terminals.
Every Halo game has had these outposts and objectives however they were part of a linear journey. It seems like that can still exist however they expanded the game for replayability and unique engagements. This adds a dynamic way to play which only makes Halo so much more fun.
The way they are making this game just seems focused around fun and I am here for their vision.
I agree on expanding on exploration and adding fun in an open world. Like others have said, I’m just hoping that these objectives are secondary (which they are). I’m curious on how the Golden Path will be handled. Granted none of us know but I’d like the main story missions to be more focused and tailored to telling the story. If it were similar to Gears 5, I’d be content. If it were like Ghost Recon Wildlands or something like that, I feel like the story isn’t going to be as compelling and the more of the onus is placed on the scale of the world rather than the story element.
Don’t get me wrong, still excited. More just curious on how they’ll blend the stories of the Halos of old and this new expansive world. I’d be willing to bet this week’s Inside Infinite will dive more into campaign and disclose more details. Perhaps they’ll clear some of this up.

We are also assuming that these “outposts” and “POIs” don’t add a decent amount to the actual story. They could supplement more narrative or information to the overall campaign.
