I can’t be the only one with this problem. Halo Infinites main menu is more demanding on my pc than actually playing a multiplayer game. My specs are RTX 2060 6gb + i7 10700k. All my drivers are up to date and windows is optimized. For some weird reason, my temps and GPU usage are higher when navigating through menus. During gameplay, my temps for GPU stay around 65-73c but in menus it’s always over 70c and up to 76. I know this isn’t very hot and not to worry about a lot but it bothers me sometimes especially since it gets louder. CPU usage spikes randomly also sometimes going up to 80-90% for a couple of seconds. Is there a quick fix for this or is the menus actually so poorly optimized lmao.
(I also set vsync on for 75hz because temps would go higher in menus if my fps was higher)
Anyone else have this?

Its only for halo infinite too. COD warzone 2.0 menu temps stay under 35c and same with MMC or CS:GO (note that they are much easier games to run tho)
Something is very strange with the menu and I do wish there was a framerate cap for it. Halo itself runs my card the hottest, I have a Strix 4080 and it can hit 62°c all while pulling around 320 to 340 watts. A Plague Tale is one of the very few games I have that will pull 380+ watts and my GPU temps are still under 60°c.

the power consumption on the 40 series are def not efficient but the temps are good imo. I totally wish there could be a framerate cap for just the menus. It would make it quieter and it cant be hard to add
I think they are. My Strix 3080 would pull 450 watts OC’ed, and it pulled that pretty often in most games. My 4080 can pull 380 OC’ed but hardly pulls anymore than 350. The 40 series are voltage limited this time, not power limited like the 30’s.
oh didnt realize the power consumption of the 30 series wow
This is a 3090 Ti vs 4080, but pay attention to the power draw from each card. The 4080 is usually under 300 watts and the 3090 Ti is usually above 400 watts…

You’ll also see in A Plague Tale, the 4080 stays above 300 watts.
I’ll see if I can’t find some information about this and report back.

Here is what I found out as of right now. Will update with more info if I get any.

Does anyone know if it’s doing the same on Xbox as well? Is there actually any way to tell without measuring the current draw at the power point?
Considering these days I spend pretty much as much time searching for matches as a I do actually playing that would make a pretty big difference to the power usage.
I wouldnt doubt it tbh. It might be more optimized on Xbox but I cant rly be sure.

A known and very popular topic. The game has terrible menus. Don’t expect a fix soon because people have been talking about it for a long time. I recommend in the card and game settings to bury and set 30 frames after minimizing the window. If I wait for it to find me a match, I click the windows hotkey and click left on the bar and then I have “game minimized” and I have 30 frames locked. There is no other way out at the moment. It also annoys me that the use of gpu and cpu in the menu is so terrible and the temperatures rise. It’s not enough that I have a wooden pc, they also do something like this in the menu.

The menu is taxing the GPU because it’s actually being rendered, the same as in game. I’m not really understand the whole the menu is based off campaign. Maybe he means it’s rendering a campaign scene?
Menus that run very high frames aren’t taxing the GPU, Halo’s menu is an example of taxing a GPU since it’s actually rendering. The menus that run high FPS, or run away frames as some call it, are menus using just images or a looping background kind of like a gif. This is where you’ll see extremely high FPS, sometimes in the 1000’s with your GPU at a very low utilization pulling almost idling power draw.
I’m not sure. I’ll ask him to elaborate a little on this. He would know since this is in his department.
Explain this a little more to me, as this sounds like a contradiction. My menu runs around 205-210fps, so I’m a bit confused.
High frame rate isn’t taxing a GPU, it’s quite the opposite. When you’re getting “run away frames”, your GPU is barley being used. Hence the reason for the high FPS and low utilization. In Halo, it’s the opposite. Your GPU is under load in the menus because the menu is being rendered, it’s not a static image or looping background.
Games that use a static image and/or looping background are not taxing at all. Think of them as just viewing pictures or gifs.
There are games that also render their background, PUBG is one that comes to my mind but they give you menu frame caps.
I understand this point. Where I’m confused is how do you know Halo is taxing on the GPU when in the menu? My task manager only shows 17-28% utilization when sitting in the menu. This isn’t any different than, say, CoD or Apex.
Don’t go by task manager, use RivaTuner. I have mine set to monitor GPU temp, usage, clocks and power/watts. Same for my CPU. This way it tells you what’s taxing what.
In this video, you can (kind of) see FEAR hitting over 2000fps in the menu but only 20ish% GPU usage. This was with my 3080, haven’t played the game with my 4080 yet…

Also, this is my new build if interested (video not finished)…

I use NVIDIA overlay bc its quick to access in game.
I don’t use GeForce experience. RivaTuner takes a little bit to set up and get it to your likings, but it’s well worth it. I use it to benchmark different settings, and can hot key your FPS average, max, 1% lows and 5% lows. I don’t believe you can do that with GeForce experience?

You can hotkey the overlay to your liking. I use alt + r. It brings up a little screen on the right or left side that has any info you want about your components
I know how it works, I just don’t like and I’m pretty sure you can’t benchmark games with it.
