Hey everyone, a while back I wrote a mountain of a post detailing my thoughts on the functionality of the MA5 series rifles as far as canon and gameplay went. One of my suggestions was that in the future, the MA5 rifle have a holographic sight type thing in place of the ammo counter, with the ammo counter being relocated to the upper portion of the display.
My suggestion was purely for cosmetic reasons, and figured it would look similar to the screen on the sniper rifle when it is unscoped, with a real-time image overlay. I had no idea at the time I wrote it that smart scope would be in the future of Halo.
Now that you can actually smart scope with the MA5D, it makes even less sense that they’d put a whopping big ammo counter display blocking your ability to sight down the weapon. I recommend that in the future, 343I include this type of sight on the MA5 rifle; I think they missed a great chance to do it in Halo 5.
If you are a picture person like me, check out this post by Sepharih over at 405th, he did a great job realizing what it could look like.
So what do you all think? Does our beloved iconic MA5 deserve a functional sight?
That would be unique but if you could do that it should have some repercussions such as your radar would only scan in front of you or radar just isn’t a thing at all while zoomed in.

I posted the link above, my device was acting up and wouldn’t let me post it in my OP for some reason. I’ll look into it and see if I can fix it.

makes sense to me actually. remember in halo 1 how all those marines had those cool green screens on one eye of their helmets?don’t you think those served some sort of purpose other than basic HUD things?? I mean this is like 500 years in the future do you really think all firearms would work the same as they do now? look at the past 100 years of guns. and how much they have evolved. do you really think it would be so crazy to have hologram sights built into guns 500 years in the future? makes sense for a game who’s subtitle is “COMBAT EVOLVED” don’t you think?

MA5 series is the AR
MA37/MA5 = Reach
MA5B = CE
MA5C = 3/ODST
MA5D = 4/5

I think he specifically was referring to where he could see the picture I referenced and since I failed to include a link he was asking about it. The link is in now in the OP.
I had actually assumed there were REQ packs for Assault rifles with sights instead of the monstrous ammo counter. I mean, you keep seeing those variants in concept art, so I just assumed with the whole ADS/Smart scope implementation that it would be seen as a REQ.

My phone still won’t let me past the link in the right spot, the dang cursor keeps jumping all around and behaving strangely.
The bolded is why I’m guessing he asking what weapon you were referring to. You didnt exactly call it an AR in the OP, just MA5 rifle. Not everyone knows what that means. Hell, I bet without looking it up, there’s people here who dont know the m45 from the m90. (no offense)

Good point, and thanks for clarifying it for everyone with the description breakdown.

Yeah, I’m also interested to see how those turn out in game. I guess I’m just a sucker for the chunky classic look of the MA5B and wish that that big ole’ ammo counter could have had a little more functionality to it.

That’s actually the point. The only way to know is by reading into the extended lore. Or the guide booklets that games never come with anymore. Hence why I said not everyone will know what that means.

Since the Smart Scope system acts as an augmented reality holographic red dot, the idea of sights in general seem abit archaic. I could understand deployable iron sights in the even of a system malfunction, but having optics is merely cosmetic. An attempt to keep the visual perception of what weapons are what.
That’s a cool mockup over at 405th, but it looks too much like any other red dot holosight for me to be used in game. I think we need a MA5E with a totally redesigned upper receiver to account for the new aiming feature. But that’s just me.
Here’s my extremely recent idea for a sighting system on the MA5 (I literally only came up with this idea about half an hour ago):
First, an ammo counter that is the same as the one seen on the BR55, this means it takes up less space but is still visible to the shooter. The counter screen is located in the bottom half of the electronics cowling. Above the ammo counter is an electronic scope with a circular eyepiece that takes up the upper portion of the cowling, the eyepiece connects to a visual sensor on the front of the cowling that is capable of 1.5x magnification, the result is a a rifle capable of taking down a target at ranges comparable to those achievable by conventional weapons like the M16 rifle/M4A1 carbine.
Gotta remember tho that the smart-scope for the normal AR is a projection sight which seems to be only usable when the wielder has a HUD of some sort

The iron sights or “Recon scope” as one attachment is known as, is essentially what you’re asking for but to remove the classic ammo counter from the AR is just kinda, yknow, weird. Like its been there on the AR since the first game (granted the AR wasn’t in halo 2 but still)
I always thought the MA5 Assault Rifle already had that feature (behind the scenes). When I was first introduced to Halo, I drew some art of the MA5B and I game most of them had a targeting system in the Ammo Counter Screen!
