Recon giveaways for Halo 3, nameplate unlocks, Bungie vs The World 2011 (Beating them unlocked blue flames, steaktaculars awarded Omaha Steaks delivered to the winning players), yeah this was something Bungie did.
Halo 3:
EOB (flaming helmet chest piece) was not available to any player, throughout Halo 3’s lifespan until the final Halo 3 Bungie day in 2010 where it was only rewarded to players who had a Bungie.net account (later unlocked for everyone in 2012). Your chances of unlock for this armor weren’t just low, they were nonexistent.
Recon was awarded as a special unlock for players who contributed to the Halo community in various ways (Machinimas, fan art, Forge contributions, contests). It was able to be unlocked in 2009 with the release of Halo 3 ODST and the completion of the Vidmaster Challenges, and unlocked for everyone regardless of completion in 2012.
Halo Reach:
Orange Flaming Helmet was unlocked with the purchase of the Legendary Edition, and never saw further public release after.
Blue Flaming Helmet was a Bungie staff exclusive until Bungie Day 2011 where if you beat a Bungie Team you’d be awarded Blue Flames. It was later unlocked through connection with Bungie.net in 2012 alongside the All Star nameplate which was also a community reward.
I think FOMO as it’s being discussed here is about participation. That’s what I hear from others, players just want the chance to participate in something involving the dev team. Why not make it a regular thing, like a small studio might do (if they had time)?
I look at it more like a sweepstake. Even if you try to stream snipe them your odds are really low of getting in their game since there are thousands of other players searching. Also people who live closer to them which I think is west coast have a way better chance because of servers.
It does suck for people outside US but are you really surprised given 343s past lack of support for non Americans?
You’re actually trying to argue that an entire day dedicated to a date that everyone is aware of is just as fair, or comparably fair, as 343 playdates. Come on. Just stop
I’m actually arguing from the point that the probability of matching in a game with a few teams within an ocean of other players is only marginally better within a 24 hour period than it is in a 2 hour period. A 4 player dev team accounts for what, less than .04% of the known Halo Infinite population size? Less than .02 with the 2 4 player teams during the 24 hour period of Halo Reach estimating that there were about 350k players online around the time?
Another way of looking at it is with the decreased population numbers of Infinite compared to Reach suggests potentially higher probability of getting matched within 2 hours than the 24 of Bungie Day 2011.
Yet another way of looking at it is that 343 seems to do these playdates that reward things far more often than Bungie did (exactly once a year at most).
Yet even another way of looking at this suggests that nobody really knows whether they will match up due to SBMM values being hidden, and we don’t know what the team is actually playing at.
All in all, my argument really revolves around the idea that there has always a slim-to-none chance of actually matching up with Devs in events like this. Trying to suggest that getting a heads up on this event might give players a significant edge is a myopic argument at best.
Hit me with a better argument where I might have to concede then.
It seems the issue isn’t necessarily with the “chance” of matching, it seems to be with the timeframe that the event takes place, at least in the context of the original post.
Strange, because people seemed to enjoy this type of “FOMO” quite extensively in the past knowing full well the chances of matching were always going to be low.
I think it’s a problem now because it’s popular to hold such an opinion about this title.
I’m pretty consistent in my stance and points, you’re the one shifting goalposts.
FOMO urges you to buy something ASAP in fear of missing out on it later.
Nowhere near the same thing as a rare item 99% of people will miss out on because you “win” it by being one of the lucky few to play with devs at a certain time.
A much shorter time frame is directly related to the chances of acquiring the specified unlockable. That’s an actual fact that you can’t argue out of. Use some common sense. Not to mention, the much shorter timeframe occurs when most are in school, which also contributes to the lower chance, so no, the chances are not comparable in any sense from 343 and Bungie “sweepstakes”.
I’m pretty sure the time difference between a miniscule 2 hour play session during work and school hours is a huge difference when compared to a, well planned and documented, full day play date with devs. I’m not sure how the counter argument gets any more substantial.
I covered a few other factors contributing to chances of acquiring the specified unlock-able above:
population sizes/comparison
SBMM
frequency of events
timing of matchmaking queue
match length
You seem hung up on one slice of the pie when there’s much more that contributes to the probability.
If you think I’m arguing out of it, you’re not reading my responses.
Oh that’s another factor, factors that interrupt ability to participate.
Which also affected other dates as well, including Thursday July 7 2011 in which I took a day off of work to participate in 24 hours of Bungie vs The World.
They are comparable as demonstrated, you just refuse to acknowledge it lol
There will be future play dates, there’s one every few months. On top of that, another factor to consider is that it seems that the Ice Unicorn emblem can be unlocked when you’re matched with any 343 employee even outside of the events. So while these events might offer a guaranteed affirmation of 343 employees out in the wild, it doesn’t mean that you can only unlock the emblem during these events. Just confirmed that this is not the case.
I’m on the anti-FOMO train when it comes to cosmetics I consider to be pretty substantial in the game (Armor coatings/pieces/effects, weapon coatings, etc.) I’m still smarting for missing out on one of the coolest coatings in the game for my Mk V and VII cores (Dark Green/Gold HCS) because I was holiday shopping while the Twitch stream was live. That kind of nonsense is absolutely weaponizing FOMO to drive engagement, and I hope to see that ethos from 343i eliminated in the future.
A nameplate isn’t the hill I’m gonna die on for this, though. Just isn’t nearly as impactful to the overall customization experience from my perspective. Besides, this emblem has been available on several different occasions (“Community Playdates”) and will ostensibly be available on many others to come. That said, I can honestly say that I think it’d be better if you were just awarded the nameplate for matching with a 343i employee at any time, in any mode. I believe Bungie did something like this in H3 and/or Reach, which was really fun.
Well, you can break down his points. And, even if it is during work hours you, as Trand0 said, probably won’t match with them. Especially with tons of people also doing the playdate. You’re better off waiting for it in the store. And as the mod said, this is something nice 343 is doing.
i played against uny last week during the community playdate. along with the other host. we won the match as well. still haven’t seen the ice unicorn emblem in my inventory. starting to think i won’t get it. fuhny part is. i recorded when uny killed me.
