Love the unicorn FOMO

I dont even care about getting this thing but its just the sheer principle of the matter that pisses me off. I didnt even know about this, but it makes sense when you consider that literally every single piece of armor or cosmetic gear in this game is attached to a timer.

343 is wack.

Fomo doesn’t apply here as a marketing strategy. No one had to buy anything to partipate. They’ll be another playdate soon (unless people keep complaining about them since their under no obligation to have them. I work 60-80 hours a week and have other obligations (familial and otherwise), hobbies, and the like and still managed to match during mcc and h5 events during the several years they were running the update. Of late they’ve been doing them on friday (a day where I have an extensively long shift), but I’m not going to complain. 343 doesn’t have to do nice things. They don’t have to do the community playdates, they don’t have to do the discord giveaways, they didn’t have to do the 343 vs the world thing from a couple years back. The timing may not be optimal for everyone (it’s certainly not for me and wasn’t when it was on wednesdays either), but that is just the way things are. 343 shouldn’t be punished or given flack for trying to engage with the community.

You want an example of FOMO in action? I have a ‘seahorse themed ceramic cutting board’ in my kitchen. That replaced a wooden one I’d had since grad school that I’d bought for a dollar at a thrift store. It’s not better than the wooden one (it’s worse), I don’t like it. But it appeared there after my counterpart went on a trip and my old one disappeared. The reason for that is my counterpart is completely incapable of passing a gift shop without browsing and possibly buying something useless. You eat at a restaurant and it has a gift shop in the front and she’ll come out with a t-shirt. You go on vacation with her and you pack an extra suitcase for the junk she’ll buy. And the two times we took my nieces to theme parks are better left unspoken.

You want to see FOMO as a marketing strategy look at anything ‘limited edition’, the so called ‘disney vault’ when it was a thing, etc, or gift shops. “You’ll never be back here again so you might never have the chance to buy this overpriced inferior cutting board again”

If 343i could do this I think it might help community relations.

Oh well, least it’s just an Emblem

Ironically, I’m in the US and I got the “not enough players to support this playlist” message during the play date.

Not to mention, most of us would never actually match with them because SBMM is active in social matches.

They did mention they would look into doing more playdates across different timezones a while back but nothing has been done yet. As a non US player you have slim chances to match with them.

People need to chill on the FOMO though. You’re basically asking for zero limited time, exclusive events because you can’t be a part of it. For everyone that is, it is usually very special so realistically Is nice to continue doing.

Asking for everything to be boring and achievable by everyone at all times definitely takes the shine out of it. Who cares if it’s FOMO seriously. I know we aren’t all adults but FOMO is genuinely the biggest nothing thing going and the older you get the more you realise that.

I actually lucked out and won mine today. Been trying since MCC launched on PC.

Best of luck to the rest of you!

Ehhhh I have to defend 343 on this one and I’m a big hater on 343 but it’s because like the flames on halo 3 and recon it’s a symbol of something earned and what not.

Agreed and it wasn’t just an emblem it was usally the Flaming Recon Helmet or something else to that degree. In addition, it wasn’t enough to play against them, you had to DEFEAT them if you got matched with them to get said prize.

This encouraged players to talk to each other unlike now where litteraly no one speaks which i get but it also did help the community be more friendly to one another and also build squads.

How did you know you matched against them? Because they had exclusive logos and the flaming recon helemet on their service record which you used to be able to see before a match, so you would know if you ran into them.

I was fortunate back in the Halo 3 days to match with some Bungie employees during one of these community play dates on a random match on team slayer from a solo que. Once myself and my teammates knew who we were about to play and the prize entailed, litteraly everyone’s mics went on and i still occasionally play with said same squad today. That’s how you build community. Note though that was THE MOST sweat match in my life of Halo lol.

FOMO is not solely related to purchasable items. It can be attributed to anything. Free or otherwise. That is why it’s ‘fear of missing’, it’s not specifically about buying something.

Edit:

To everyone else; there’s here, a ‘fix’ for this is to enable this drop for anyone that matches with 343, in a play date or not. Whilst the odds are still slim, it still increases peoples chances a little bit.

Super simple suggestion to at least address the fact that these play dates seem to be announced via Twitter (I’m not on it) and are irregular. The last play date I know of before yesterday was February.

Why can’t 343 announce play dates on this site? You know… the Halo website.

I still think this is an over reaction. Like @Whiskaye said, it’s a symbol of something earned. If you don’t get it, then you don’t get it.

I think ‘earn’ isn’t the proper word here. Earning something implies that there was a clear avenue available to everyone, which isn’t the case.

The way the match composer works, if you aren’t in a similar skill bracket or have similar latency to them, then your chances of being put in a match together are slim to none.

Unrelated, Tiana wasn’t even playing on her own account.

The only one I’d say has a truly fair chance of unlocking is the earth unicorn from discord.

Do you not know what FOMO stands for? They’re using it to essentially force people who care to play when they otherwise wouldn’t

Yes. I do. I’m not disagreeing that its a problem.

I’m saying the chances of getting matched with a dev is astronomically low. How is it fomo if you’re missing out about 99% of the time?

It’s FOMO (IMO) because it’s HYPER limited. Your chances of getting a flaming helmet and recon in Halo 3 we’re low, but ANYONE could get it at ANYTIME. In Halo Infinite, you’re forced to play during an extremely limited period of time of which most people can’t meet.

Sure, I guess FOMO isn’t the (perfect) term since to have a fear, you have to be unknowing if it will ever come back, but it’s still a case of them forcing players who care to play the game when they otherwise wouldn’t with incentives they’ll never get for reasons not under their control (regions, SBMM, barely any devs)

Doesn’t really bother me, they do play dates when it’s 3am for me & I rather not lose sleep over a Unicorn emblem

What a ridiculous and irrational statement.

You are clearly missing out on a beautiful emblem. Start setting your alarm for 2:57am or you will. Miss emblem.

My guy, community play events have been an industry staple for as far back as I can remember, and special rewards alongside them are also not uncommon. Back in the day this was something special, and it was something cool that people could identify and acknowledge the sheer improbability of the matchup, is it just considered FOMO now because that’s the buzzword to describe how certain vocal members of the community feel about Halo Infinite?

Hell there’s an achievement in Garry’s Mod that unlocks when you get into a game with Garry himself, and that’s entirely random. Bungie Day 2011 was one of the best days of my life, 24 hours of Halo Reach and I managed to match with the team once in an effort to earn a Steaktacular.

Bungie Day 2011 was 24 hours where you could potentially match with Bungie teams. Let’s say an average match lasts 10 minutes, I played (more or less) 144 matches, and managed to match once with Bungie. The sheer improbability of matching in 24 hours was low. If 2 hours is too little time, and 24 hours of round the clock matchmaking also is too little time, what is an adequate amount of time?

What?

It’s ridiculous & irrational for me to stay up all night for a 10% chance of getting in a match with 343 during a Play date for a Emblem I’ll never use
