Alright guys and gals. I’ve been around h5 since beta, I grind whenever I can but I have yet to even hit onyx 1800 in any playlist. I don’t really feel like I’m improving much anymore, and I want to change that. Maybe I need to mess with my sens, maybe I just need to change how I play. This last weekend I was at worlds, at they had a 2v2 station set up where I felt I played really well, only losing to a few people that just had a more consistent aim and better doubles tactics than I did.
Anyways, this is about Arena in general. I’m not a warzone player, and I don’t want WZ tips. I play most everything in ranked other than Breakout, and if you want my current ranks:
SWAT: Onyx 1682
HaloWC FFA: Onyx 1571
Snipers: Diamond 4
Slayer: Onyx 1635
Team Arena: Diamond 2
Haven’t gotten a team for enough games to get a 4’s WC rank, and same thing with Dubs. From playing with a ton of people, including past mainstage players (for ffa), I’m considered a mid onyx player around, I just solo way too often on my main. Anyhow here are controller settings:
Defualt Buttons and Sticks
Horizontal Sensitivity: 3.5
Vertical Sensitivity: 4
Look Acceleration: 3
Inversion: Off
Toggle Crouch: Off
Maintain Sprint: On
Auto-Stabilize: On
Hold to Clamber: On
Vibration: Off
Dead Zones: 3% and 1%

I would say that the one tip even a lowly Platinum like me could give is to ditch the default setup. Go Helljumper. Helljumper is the best strafe setup on the option menu, and at levels as high as yours you’ll need the advantage.

I haven’t really played in a while, but I’ve been playing Halo since CE, competed in H3/Reach and consistently held Top 10 Champ in FFA for the first 18 months of Halo 5. Going to the Finals really sparked my motivation to play again - if you’re wanting someone to play with and help improve let me know.

Sounds great! Unfortunately, I can’t really play as much as I used to, but I try to get some games every week. It’s always good to have another person to try and learn from.
Considering you’re already fairly decent, I’d guess it’s probably some small things that are keep you from going up aside from not playing in a party. Could be pushing at the wrong times, not helping a teammate at the right time, not setting up correctly, etc. Only thing I would say is to watch your films and look for things that you did wrong which could be fixed in future games and also play with good people who could help you out like heytred offered.
Been playing Halo since the beginning. I’m above average, but never played competitive or anything.
The one piece of advice I received a long time ago from the best player I’ve ever known in person, is to always go for least deaths (in slayer). It’s treated me well all these years, and I think someone like yourself, who is definitely better than me nowadays, should still consider this advice .
For objective games, he advised me not to make a move on the objective until you get the opposition in an unfavorable respawn scenerio. Sometimes this means don’t pull or plant until most of them are respawning, and sometimes it means don’t pull or plant until you’ve gotten their respawn area far from the objective point.
Hope that contributed something for you!
Honestly I’ve hit the same impasse man. The only way I’ve found to break it is get a good team around the same lvl or higher. That team will take you pass that barrier and you’ll be playing against higher tier players with teams learn how to compete in that lvl and now high onyx low champs are a walk in the park (for the most part) can’t compete against pro or number 1 teams yet but who knows maybe we’ll get there.
Practice in campaign before you get on mm because it will give you a feel for the game.
In mm always try to aim for the other guys head
I have to agree with the people who say play with a team. Even if you are insanely good, you can only progress in rank so much before your random teammates let you down. It’s also important to know callouts, time power ups, learn spawns etc, but I’m assuming you have that down for the most part since your already ranking onyx
Try to advance yourself, I kinda have a belief that every player has their own or playstyle. You just need to improve yourself with that style. You can try to use other playstyles that can be efficient and still comfortable for you. Also when you have that playstyle, adjust the control settings so your comfortable for, also you can change your button layout to match the playstyle that you have started using.
Also, you should only play FFA alone. It would be best to get a fireteam together and play team ranked playlists together. Bond with your team and push to no limits knowing about each other, their prefered range, game style, prefered weapon, proficient weapons, reactions to situations, and also remind each of spawn times of weapons and armor mods, call out targets and their locations, and have eachothers’ backs. Find people around your skill level or find ones that are below your skill level and train and mentor them, teaching them the spawn times, locations, etc. I would definatley fall in the below category that needs mentoring and training as the highest I ever got was gold 2 while I was teaming up in doubles with my old clan leader. AND AN IMPORTANT TIP TO ASSEMBLING A TEAM, ALWAYS TEAM WITH PEOPLE WITH MIC’S FOR COMMUNICATION.
A huge factor for me that always helped me progress in any of the Halo games past and present is MOVEMENT. In Halo 4 and Halo 5 in particular there are a lot of unused opportunities for movement and getting the jump on other players by taking unexpected and unconventional routes around the maps. In Halo 4 in particular (back when I had lots and lots of time to play) I was ranked in the top 20 or higher worldwide for assassinations, flagsassinations, ballsassinations, and airsassinations - of which were tribute to effort I put in to learning the maps and mechanics to put myself in positions that were unexpected to most players. In Halo 5 I’ve taken a much more casual approach but I still try and take time to learn different ways to get around maps. My highest CSR is FFA Onyx 1549, but that’s from a while back. Seeing as you play a lot of FFA the movement skills are super useful there. I’d recommend going into custom games on the maps in rotation for FFA and go bonkers trying to find fun new ways to move around while avoiding the main paths but always keeping them in sight so you can get the jump on other players. Looking up videos can be super helpful too.
Bro you already seem good enough but since I’m a gold there’s not a lot i can help out with but I’ve noticed playing with a lot of my other high ranked friends (onyx diamond players) a lot of times it’s small things they forget to do one of my friends was a onyx tier player but I’ve noticed when watching his game clips he doesn’t reload and my other friend tends to always stay in the fight despite being 1 shot. again I’m not a very good player as far as arena goes but I have tended to notice small things my friends do
I’ve never made it past diamond, so any advice I can give would probably be useless lol
