Edit: It also is tied to your account meaning only you can redeem it.

During the 2nd weekend of flighting, existing Insiders were sent a Friend code via email. Unlike the steam keys sent via initial invites, this code was intended to be shared out with other people. It was a Waypoint codes that, when redeemed, authorized that account and generated a Steam key for it
