Let’s do a hypothetical scenario. Suppose that I have three challenges that require me to get kills with the Disruptor, the Sentinel Beam, and the Pulse Carbine. The only way for me to make significant progress while playing is to use one of those three weapons. Suppose there’s a sick Ultimate Challenge reward that I need to complete these things for.
Now let’s say I see an enemy and I’ve got a sentinel beam and a rocket launcher. One of these two options is gonna let me make progress toward my battle pass and toward that sick Ultimate Challenge reward, and there’s no incentive for me to play at my best to win a match (no win bonuses). Guess I’ll use the sentinel beam to the detriment of my allies. Sorry, boys.
Weapon challenges suck. Here’s what makes them even worse:
Sometimes kills don’t track properly and you don’t get credit
Progress only counts at the end of a match. So if you crash or get booted out, SORRY. You get no credit
Assists don’t count, which leads to passive animosity to my allies when I’m about to snag a kill with a challenge weapon and it gets yoinked from me
Getting into a match in which none of your challenge weapons spawn means the match is a waste of time.
And when you do get into a match with one of your weapons, you better believe you’re going to keep detouring to that weapon spawn regardless of what makes sense during the match
Amen, on top of all that none of the plasma weapons or vehicles should be included in challenges, plasma weapons struggle to kill unshielded enemies and any vehicle that isnt a ghost or warthog are as hard to find as unicorns, even when you do find them you are competing with 12 other people on your team to get control of the vehicle in the first place. its beyond difficult to accomplish most of the tasks and just not worth the time
Agreed, but I’d also include game mode specific challenges as being bad. The more specific the challenge is, the less it encourages actually playing the game. If challenges have to be the main way to progress the BP, specificity needs to be minimized.
EG, “Kill 15 players in PvP” is a better challenge than “Kill 15 players with the mangler in PvP”, and for games, “Play 5 games” or “win 5 games” is better than “win 5 games of stockpile”.
The absolute worst ones are the ones that require incredibly specific circumstances, such as “kill 3 players carrying the Oddball in PvP”, where it requires you to get the right game type (chosen randomly), requires the enemy team to get the ball (punishes playing well), and only progresses for the player who gets the killing blow (isn’t shared via assists).
Basically, the challenge system as it is seems to be fundamentally flawed, and the terrible weapon challenges are a symptom of that.
