It does look similar. For good reason, rumor has it that what are approaching in the picture is a forerunner planet. No confirmation yet though. Should be interesting to see how that plays out next year.

Not necessarily. What looks like the portal to the Ark could very well be just some kind of entrance to the inside of the planet-y think. After all, shield worlds are basically Dyson spheres.
It’s pretty safe to assume that what Chief is approaching, the Legendary Planet, is a Forerunner structure or installation. While the promotional poster for Halo 4 looks somewhat similar to the Ark Portal on Earth, I doubt that they are the same, or have same function. The portal we see in the Halo 4 trailer is quite dissimilar to the Ark Portal.
Alternate reality. Must go inside Alter-Earth to discover seeeecerts and get back to real Earthz. hurrrrr

I was thinking the same exact thing when I watched the trailer. I was like “Those spires look a lot like the Ark portal…”
343 did say it had taken place in an undisclosed amount of time after Halo 3.
What if in that time the Forerunners have taken over Earth, or maybe Chief actually went back in time and this is what Earth looked like before all the plants and planetary crust… What if Earth is actually a Forerunner planet…

I realized they were similar as soon as I saw the image. I think they did it as more of an art thing, not as a subliminal message that Halo 4’s story will revolve around the Ark.
