In the recent hype for Halo 4 it seems that many people have over looked a simple bit of information pertaining to the whereabouts of the magnificent Master Chief.
In Halo 3’s The Ark level, 343 Guilty Spark says that the Ark is 2^18(262,144) light years from galactic center. The radius of the galaxy is 50,000 light years. If we subtract the radius of the galaxy from the distance from the center we get the distance from the edge (262,144 – 50,000 = 212,144). Therefore the ark is 212,144 light-years from the galactic rim.
This bit of simple math is quite significant as it shows the distance that MC is from the galactic rim. The reason this is so significant is that MC doesn’t have any means of propulsion, and considering that even if he could travel at the speed of light it would still take 212,144 years to reach the galaxy’s rim. This means that the legendary ending and subsequently the Halo 4 teaser is at least 212,144 years from the time of Halo 3.
This apparent oversight dose not in any way make me less of a fan, and I am not complaining, I am simply making an observation.
P.S. If anyone knows of a source where the distance from galactic center is not stated to be 2^18 could you let me know.
> But if he went through the portal why isn’t he on Earth.
Mendicant Bias likely altered the coordinates, given that he had control over the Ark when he arrived.
Slipspace isn’t just one direction either, this was proven in Halo Legends where the 7 Halo Rings are all shown going into the portal at the same time. They each end up in different places, this is probably why the ship was split in half - Mendicant Bias redirecting the Dawn whilst it was simultaneously sending it to Earth.
John didn’t make it through the portal because it collapsed when Forward Unto Dawn was part way through it. Therefore teleporting the Arbiter back to Earth and John to a random destination.
But if people are going for speculation then you might as well ask why did the front end of the Forward Unto Dawn land in water when the portal was no where above water?
Soo much math… but I see what he meant. MC obviously made it through, or else the Halo would’ve killed him. He was probably stranded somewhere near the galaxies edge…
I think the answer is that I always thought that the portal closed at the Dawn was entering the portal, not exiting. It would make sense if it closed upon exit as the front half would be on earth, but the not-so-lucky (pun intended) half would still be in slip space, thus exiting who knows where.
the portal collapsed as they were travelling through slipspace, not while they were in slipspace, so master chief and cortana were sent to a random point in slipspace
