The Created absolutely demolished human technology. MJOLNIR GEN2 Armor, being so new, was completely lost to time along with all schematics, so John has to use his old MKVI. Consequently, this means no thrusters, which means no sprint (it was powered by thrusters in H5), hover, dash, etc, and that’s the lore reason behind the return to classic movement abilities. It would also give some lore for the old art style, old pelicans, etc, and not just nanobots. Anything before roughly ~2552 is dysfunctional now, and the UNSC needs to develop all new tech while using their old stuff.
I’ve personally never liked the idea that the Created’s presence would be a reason for the UNSC suddenly shifting back to older technology. If the new stuff is disabled or destroyed, why wouldn’t the older tech suffer from the same consequences? The documentation, engineering, logistics, and manufacture of all of the equipment would barely be different.
I still think the best way to introduce a return to the older art style would simply be something along the lines of UNSC studies finding that the newer technology simply isn’t performing up to the standards that they wanted, thus initiating programs to develop more effective alternatives that take more inspiration from older variations.

You know what I think I partly-mostly agree after having had some time to think about the trailer LOL

Well it depends on how 343I wants to do things. If you remember in the fall of Reach mini movie, they showed that the first armors sets that the Spartans got had thrusters on them. So this new armor that Chief is wearing could still have thrusters. But hey guess we’ll wait and see when the game comes out.
That’s probably the best canonical explaination as to why the classic artstyle/gameplay is back but then again I don’t think there was a canonical reason why the artstyle changed so drastically or why Spartans can now fly around like power rangers so.
I’m not sure the canonical reason is all that important. If the gameplay does return to classic, for whatever reason (as long as it’s not stupid), I will be happy.

There will surely be thrusters in game. How else will you dodge Rhinos attacks?

Spartans are supposed to move faster than the human eye could perceive. Kelly especially. There are plenty of examples in the books (Chief’s training course in Fall of Reach, Kelly baiting sentinels in Ghosts of Onyx, etc.) The Chief vs. Locke fight was so heavily criticized because of how slow they fought vs. how fast they should have been fighting based on the lore. In my opinion, Halo 5’s movement mechanics (at least sprint and clamber) fit in with the lore more than classic Halo gameplay.

Immersion shouldn’t trump accessibility , mechanics or balance. Quite the opposite actually. Campaign should be all about immersion , make me feel like I’m in the world ; Multi player should be about balance and mechanics , (accessibility if you are worried about growing the fan base). This is why Classic Halo thrived. It was simple enough to be a pick up and play game , but deep enough to be almost impossible to “master”.
