343 never updated any of the Halo 3 playlists, as Sam said Lone Wolves has always been between 6 and 8 players. Maybe you’re remembering another mode or another game (though I don’t ever recall any FFA Halo mode with less than 6 players)

I have been playing Lone Wolves on the 360 since day one (on smurfs and I have a 50 5 Star on my main and many other 50s there too). This is how it was and it has always been like this, you can get 4 player FFA, 5 player FFA or 6 player FFA. It all depends on how many players you are able to find within the skill range that you are searching in. It’s a time wheel that goes in a circle, you keep finding players until the wheel goes a full lap and once it does the search will either reset (3 or less) or it will start with 4, 5 or 6 depending on how many you find.
