I think the bigger issue is that they fire through walls and the ground.

Tell me about it. This is one of my biggest issues when it comes to Blitz firefight or versus a enemy. As long they protect and scout for their Locust to start hammering your armies or bases. I would consider this issue as a bug since it’s a unit that capable of combating units behind background such as Hills.
