Locking posts

What is the point of locking posts? Why not just leave the post open for example in the support forums lets say you lock the post so no one can reply to it anymore, what happens if the person who made the post their help from the person that locked it didn’t work now they have to make a whole new post just to be locked again.

Mods don’t lock posts for no reason, typically it’s because the post is against the rules or in the wrong forum.

Leaving them open allows the thread to take up space on a forum where it doesn’t belong. If it needs to be moved, move it. If it’s locked because its a blatant troll or just dumb, then good.

Some threads outlive their purpose and it doesn’t make sense to allow discussion to continue. If a thread breaks the rules or has continous moderation action then it doesn’t make sense to keep it open.

Regarding support topics, they are not usually locked before a fix has been confirmed. Thread creators are free to send a message to the moderator in question so it can be unlocked.

If you have any further questions about moderation, feel free to PM a moderator - if you recall the rules of the forum, public discussion of moderation is not allowed
