I think Jameson Locke takes over the title of Master Chief. I’ll explain. The Prologue of Halo 4 had a shadowy man talking to Halsey. Near the end of the interrogation, she asks if they want to replace John. When John comes back in Halo 4, Cortana “dies”. John is emotionally broke. He goes AWOL to find Cortana. Seeing he’s been fighting for years, Locke is sent to find Chief. When Chief doesn’t come back, they are forced to put him down. This would kill morale, though. The only way to stop this is, again, replacing him. Now it gets interesting. There will be a split ending. But, to keep the canon intact, the outcome is the same, but with different actions. Locke either kills Chief, or sees that Chief just wants to get away from the war that he lost so much from (his family, almost all his friends, Cortana, his humanity). In this case, Chief goes into hiding. Either way, though, Locke takes the Chief’s roll and armor as a symbol for hope.

he was emotionally broke at 14, cortanna is just another on the list just like johnson.
What makes you think he’s searching for cortanna? theres no evidence she magicaly survived getting nuked especially concidering theres no way she could have escaped. even if she did thers no way chief would have known.
theres nothing hinting at cortanna coming back.
there are hints (locke, escelations next 72h, hunt the truth) that chief is targeting Oni. Oni is in the cross hairs of quite a few Halsey, Jul andfor good reason.
Chief avenged cortanna by hunting down and eleminating diadact. if he has a grudge left it should be against Oni for robbing him of his family, his childhood, and what should have been his life.
It was only a thought, not to be taken too seriously
The Master Chief isn’t really a title, but a rank.
I know it’s a rank. I meant more like a symbol of hope. If Master Chief dies, what does that mean for humanity? It was only speculation

Metaphorically Locke already has become Master Chief John has seemingly abandoned humanity for his own goal Locke hunts John to bring him back for honor and duty to humanity which John used to embody but currently doesn’t.
