Is Lobby Balancing the right way to protect bad/new players? For those unfamiliar, Lobby Balancing makes it so that the Best Player is paired with the worst players in a given lobby, while the rest of the players in the lobby are placed on the other team(s).
Personally a “boot camp” playlist that teaches the skills and knowledge, but even better than that, training with bots to hone your skills and aim and for more experienced players to warm up before playing Ranked works way better than Lobby Balancing as it can be used by players of all skill levels.
Well, the best way to protect bad/new players is to hope and pray that more bad/new players are playing a particular playlist at the same time as them. Besides that, Lobby Balancing keeps the teams “fair” in that all of the best players in a match aren’t placed on the same team to pound on the worst players.
The bot thing would likely only really benefit the more experienced players. It might be okay for newer or lesser skilled players, but bots would not be able to mimic how it is to play against an actual person. Not with all the movement mechanics available to us in Halo 5.
In any case, the “boot camp” playlist idea wouldn’t solve the Lobby Balancing thing as it’s mostly a population issue. What would solve the Lobby Balancing thing is what I mentioned in the first paragraph.
Lobby balancing is the still-very-evil lesser of evils. The greater evil being a situation where higher skilled players simply time out of the lobby because no match can be found.
A third option, evil or not as you decide, would be a game with a lower skill floor and a narrower over-all skill gap. I know that sets competitive players on fire, but the width of the skill gap doesn’t have to be a given. The fact that your population will dwindle over time to the point of being unable to sustain a wide skill gap… that is a given. Halo 5 passed that point a very long time ago, imo.

He^ pretty much nailed it.
But, I do think custom game AI bots could prove very helpful to new players who aren’t comfortable playing against actual people online. With that said, the Heroic Firefight mode kind of offers you a similar method to simply train yourself on general things such as aiming, moving, and using the sandbox. It does not however grant you the opportunity to learn the Arena maps with simplified combat practice in the same way a custom game with AI bots potentially could.
I think players should be restricted to Social Arena and Warzone until they reach a certain experience level. Would also help address the rampant smurfing.
I also think players should be restricted to social and Warzone until maybe SR 10 as an example. Lots of games make you hit a certain level before you can enter ranked battle, splatoon 2 come to mind off the top of my head.
I also think bots would be a great inclusion to the game and if Xbox live is down or you just want a more low key experience playing with bots could be great fun even for a more experienced player especially if you get to choose the difficulty level of the bots. Why does this game not include bots for offline multiplayer? Does anyone have a guess at the reason?

Definitely agree with this part. Bots on Arena maps would be great for new players because while Firefight is good for some things, giving them an opportunity to play bots on Arena maps would make them familiar with the (generally) much quicker-paced Arena.
I think that although an A.I. bot mode would help introduce new players, it would be the machine learning section that can learn from the gameplay that players of a rank area provide that causes the problem. As the game progresses, the bots would get more advanced until the point where the lower level players simply cannot keep up.The bots would eventually become like the insane drivatars from Forza that people managed to create through playing. I’d personally love to see it personally, but it would not bode well for new players towards the middle of the game’s lifespan. Think what OpenAI did with DotA 2, without the playing against itself and coaching. You would eventually get bots that can compete with the pros.
Here’s an idea, let players start matchmaking but place them against bots. As the player continues to play matches, replace the bots with real players until all the bots are gone. There are already games that do this in some capacity and they play well for the most part. if these bots are set to a baseline, introductory level where new players can still have a challenge but not get utterly destroyed.
TrueSkill can actually support AI bots. Josh mentioned it in one of his GDC talks. He even went so far as to say that you can actually assign different difficulty levels to the bots.

Definitely would agree with that.
