Loadout Changes in Customs (3 Weapons?)

Before you reply, know that this thread has been opened by me for discussion, not as a suggestion. I’m asking for your thoughts on a possible scenario, not proposing this as “the next great idea.” This is food for thought, not a “revolutionary” or “new” game mechanic.

A few modern shooters have adopted a three-weapon system, the most notable being Destiny. I’ve been thinking about that kind of system, and I though, “What if Halo 6 had a similar loadout style?”

I, personally, don’t think that a three-weapon loadout would fit in competitive play, but it could add some variety to customs, as well as specialized social playlists. For this reason alone, I’d like to entertain the idea for a moment.

Again, this would apply to customs and specialized social playlists only. Unless it were perfectly designed, balanced, and accepted into competitive play, it wouldn’t be present in any competitive playlist, lest a competitive gamemode be designed to work with it perfectly.

On a related note, adding loadouts to custom games would help to add more flexibility and variety to possible gamemode creations. If a three-weapon system were implemented as well (again, customs only), further variety could be achieved. It would streamline some gamemode/map building, and allow for more gametypes that aren’t currently possible.

For instance, rather than setting up spawn with the weapons you want people to choose between, you could just give them the choice of loadout. Perhaps you could toggle the third weapon slot off if it doesn’t fit your gametype. Perhaps you could lock the third weapon from being swappable.

This kind of thing could make customs more flexible, give variety to new gametypes, and maybe even make the game better for it. What are your thoughts? Would a three-weapon loadout system work in customs, given the right game rules? Would some gamemodes be better off with this? Or maybe worse? Would a three-weapon loadout even work in enough gamemodes to be worth adding in?

That’s all. Discuss, if you wish.

I feel glad that you explicitly say that it would only occur in customs and some social gametypes, but also… Disappointed that you had to do it because of how many people just skip over everything and say that it would ruin the competitive aspect of the game without them actually reading it.

I used to play Destiny and I thought that the three gun system was pretty cool to have but very restricted except with some guns like Universal remote and other guns. But what you’re suggesting is pretty revolutionary to halo (for better or worse). A minor problem would be is how would you swap to the third slot efficiently. Would it be like destiny or just the standard tap?

I would think that weapon swapping would be like Destiny. It seems the wisest way to do this sort of thing.

Also, if this sort of thing did work in a competitive scheme (perhaps the third slot could hold a low-damage weapon with unlimited ammo with no way to swap it out), I’d have no problem with it being used in competitive play. However, the current two-weapon system already works with competitive play, and it would be easier for the devs, as well as for the players, to stick with what already works for competitive play.

Having it as an option for social and custom gamemodes adds flexibility to gamemode creation, as described in the OP, and it could help out on that scene. Some really good gamemodes could come out of a three-weapon system, and that’s what I’d like to explore.

I mean, imagine a three-weapon Fiesta-style gamemode. More carnage, and, as a result, more fun. At least, in theory.

I think that a third weapon slot would be a GREAT idea. In my opinion, only the third weapon should be load out. I think that the third weapon should have maybe 5 different ones so there is SOME choice. There should be some way to unlock these weapons (every few levels you get to a get a new one).
