Can someone explain to me how bungie and most recently 343 fit so much epicness and amazingness into all of their live action trailers. When you compare any one live action trailer to forward unto dawn, or halo nightfall it’s ridiculous. They were complete and utter failures. The plot holes and terrible writing are ruining the chances of ever seeing a real halo movie. Halo nightfall was a yawn fest and yet, the halo odst live action trailer gave me chills. It was amazing.
The trailers are supposed to get you excited for the game, whereas the TV shows such as Nightfall and FUD are for entertainment purposes.
Lol, entertainment purposes. I was thinking about using it as a nighttime sleep aid.
Trailers are often made by the dedicated in-house talent at the game studio. They’re crafted by people who are immersed in the franchise; Halo is their job. Even for new staff, if they’re at 343, it’s all Halo all the time. For those live-action Halo 3 trailers, which of course weren’t made by Bungie, we can assume that Bungie was at least on top of making it happen the way they wanted it to happen and/or they happened upon a director who had a talent for what he was doing, if only for those few scenes. It also helps when you only need to make (and have tight control over, if aspects of production are being outsourced) one to five minutes of good cinema instead of one to five hours.
FuD and Nightfall were farmed out to cobbled-together teams of teams (no typo) of people whose work is making something out of whatever is handed to them by whoever hands it to them. There’s a lot going on that the party representing the property (in this case 343) doesn’t necessarily have control over.
Agreed, We Are ODST is my favorite advertisement for a video game ever. It’s not even in English.
I also liked the diorama live action trailer for H3. Damn.

Yeah, Nightfall and FuD aren’t very interesting but like Firts Glimphs said, trailers, being one to five minutes long, have to convey a glimpse of what is going to happen, whereas FuD and Nightfall were made as TV entertainment, even if they weren’t very good.
Putting together a minute-long trailer is trivial compared to making a TV series. There’s no need to write likeable characters or immersive plots; you don’t even need any dialogue. Just create one scene with decent cinematography and add a soundtrack.
