Linear Ranking in Halo 4

Hey everybody, I’m here today to express my opinions regarding the Linear Ranking system in Halo 4 (the one where you rank up based on kills, wins, etc. and you just keep getting higher and higher in Rank, like in Reach.)

First off, let me begin by saying, “DONT TAKE AS LONG TO REACH THE MAX LEVEL AS IN REACH!”
Getting to Inheritor “legitimately” takes an INSANE amount of time, so I’d prefer if it could take a LOT less time. I mean I love linear ranking systems and all, but it’s hard to care about a ranking which takes months to progress in just a little bit.

Secondly, DONT make it all about playtime like it is in Reach! I understand that there will be credits awarded for kills, assists, etc. but please make it so that playtime isn’t the overriding factor for your linear-based ranking (although it should still affect it IMO).

Personally, I’m a fan of linear-style ranking as long as the matchmaking system has some sort of algorithm which allows players to play with similarly-skilled players. Linear ranking allows players to constantly want to keep playing so that they can keep ranking up, get new weapons and upgrades, etc. so therefore I’m pretty happy that there’s going to be one in Halo 4. It’s just that I’m hoping it doesn’t take so BLAM long to rank up, because once you rank up in Reach’s higher levels, you really have no motivation to keep going because the next rank is so far away.

So what do you guys think? Are you happy about there being a linear ranking system alongside the skill-based ranking? How long do you want each rank to last, and how long do you think it should take to get to the top?

Didn’t David Eliis (Or someone) say that there wouldn’t be a “Warrant Officer Grade 3”?

If this is true, then it probably means you’ll rank up faster :wink:

I don’t mind the inclusion of both progressive ranking and skill rating systems, so long as the two are not connected in any way (like Halo 3).

As for how long it takes to rank up, I think Reach was okay. Either ranking needs to take a while, or there needs to be a prestige system.

In regards to experience distribution, it looks like Halo 4 is following the right path: a small “game completion” bonus, a win bonus, and then points for objectives completed.

Reach definitely WASNT okay. Having to play 3 months without any rewards AT ALL is way too difficult. Previously, even if you were a Reclaimer it would take at least 30 days to get to Inheritor w/ the 120k credit cap.

It’s was fine for me. Then again, I don’t really understand the fascination of ranking up, anyway. I personally see ranking systems as visual gimmicks that do nothing constructive for most games.
